Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The postholder will provide junior level clinical assessment and management of infants, children and young people presenting with acute medical conditions to Oxford Children’s Hospital with direct supervision and support from the senior medical team. Clinical duties include the assessment and management of patients referred by primary care, children presenting to the Children’s Emergency Department who require paediatric review, patients managed within the Children’s Clinical Decision Unit, and children admitted to the paediatric wards. There will also be opportunities to work within a paediatric specialty during the daytime. The postholder will work at junior grade level within the acute and specialty paediatric rota, contributing alongside paediatric registrars/middle grade doctors within a consultant-led service. Consultant paediatric support is available at all times. The Children’s Emergency Department at the John Radcliffe Hospital is a dedicated self-contained paediatric facility operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Children and young people from birth to 15 years of age are seen within the department. Children presenting with injuries are primarily managed by Emergency Department clinicians, whilst children requiring paediatric medical assessment are reviewed by the paediatric team. The post holder will be working alongside consultants, specialty doctors, paediatric specialty registrars, resident doctors, advanced clinical practitioners and specialist nursing staff. The role includes participation in paediatric resuscitations, management of safeguarding concerns and liaison with specialty teams across the Children’s Hospital.

Out of Hours duties:

Out-of-hours duties form part of the acute paediatric resident doctor rota and include the assessment and management of children admitted under acute general paediatrics and specialty paediatrics teams in Oxford Children’s Hospital. The postholder will provide junior resident cover for both general paediatric and specialist paediatric inpatients and will work closely with consultant colleagues and specialty teams as required. Long day and night duties are resident shifts undertaken within the paediatric FY/ST1-2 rota. Further out-of-hours duties include twilight shifts within the Children’s Clinical Decision Unit.
