Job overview

The Paediatric Trainee ANP will work within the Ashford and St Peter's Paediatric Oncology service, in partnership with the multidisciplinary team, to deliver high-quality, family-centred care for children and young people receiving cancer treatment.

The postholder will contribute to the assessment, treatment, and ongoing management of oncology patients across inpatient, day-care, and ambulatory pathways.

They will have/develop advanced clinical skills, participate in oncology emergency management, and support safe coordination with tertiary centres. Prescribe medication within own level of knowledge and competence and within the scope of the Trust’s policy for Non-Medical Prescribing on completion of this qualification.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will work within Little Oaks Oncology Unit to provide continuity of care. The post holder will support Ash Ward reviewing Oncology patients daily.

This is a clinical role intended to deliver quality, efficient and timely care to service users. The post holder will improve the communication between the POSCU and tertiary units.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical/Professional Responsibilities

  • Undertake advanced clinical assessment of paediatric oncology patients under supervision during training and develop independence on qualifying.
  • To work autonomously in partnership with the multidisciplinary team, utilising their clinical and nursing experience, knowledge and skills in oncology to develop and promote excellence in the delivery of medical and nursing care.
  • Support delivery of chemotherapy, supportive therapies, and symptom management.
  • Participate in the management of oncology emergencies (e.g., febrile neutropenia, tumour lysis risk).
  • Contribute to safe admission, discharge, and escalation processes.
  • Play a pivotal role in providing continuity of competent, comprehensive and coordinated care for children, young people and their families from time of referral and throughout treatment across Ash ward and Little Oaks.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and contribute to MDT discussions.
