Applications are invited for a Junior Clinical Fellow rotational posts in Paediatrics at the Evelina London Children’s Hospital. This is an exciting opportunity to gain paediatric experience at a world class paediatric hospital with a wealth of training and education opportunities available to successful applicants. Whilst these are not accredited training posts, they attract the same training opportunities, including study leave, a named educational supervisor, study leave allowance and a very active educational program.

We have several posts available starting in March 2027 and Sep 2027. There are six month posts available or we can offer longer rotational posts between various specialties. We have a strong track record in supporting trainees through a number of posts and subsequent successful entry into the national training programmes however we are keen to hear from you whether your prior experience in paediatrics is minimal or significant.

Due to the volume of applicants, unfortunately we are unlikely to able to consider candidates without previous UK experience within the NHS.

Complex General Paediatrics

The posts are based in the Evelina London Children’s Hospital at St Thomas’ Hospital. The General Paediatric team is led by 12 paediatric consultants and has 5 full-time registrars, 12 FY2-ST3 doctors and 2 FY1s. We provide on-site paediatric consultant presence between 08.00-21.00 in line with the London Standards. Overnight care, is provided by consultant support from home and the hospital at night team which is supported by a strong paediatric nurse practitioner team.

The postholder will gain complex general paediatric, paediatric High dependency care and paediatric ED experience. Sub-specialities which are supported by the general paediatric team also include diabetes and endocrinology, gastroenterology, haemoglobinopathy, infectious disease, respiratory and surgery.

Complex General Paediatrics/Special interest in Education

The postholder will spend 40% of their time in medical education and 60% working clinically in General Paediatric team on a full shift system. For the education role, they will join the Education fellow team (3 people in total) and will participate in delivering education activities for both the undergraduate and postgraduate learners. This post is only available from Sep 26 and ideally the postholder is able to do this for 12 months.

Paediatric Surgical fellows: ENT, Paediatric Orthopaedic and General Surgery

Junior Clinical Fellow (Trust Doctor) Specialties: ENT and Orthopaedics. The post is based in the Evelina London Children’s Hospital at St Thomas’ Hospital. The postholder will gain HDU, complex paediatrics, paediatric specialties, paediatric surgery and paediatric surgical specialty experience, and will participate in a full rota.

The postholder will be part of a team of 9 junior doctors in the surgical specialities. Duties are worked on a full shift system, Previous paediatric experience is desirable. The post would ideally suit a candidate wishing to enhance/consolidate their paediatric experience in a leading paediatric centre with a view to specialist training in paediatrics as a career.

This is not a recognized training post but it attracts the same training opportunities, including study leave, named surgical educational supervisor and general paediatric clinical supervisor and a very active educational programme.

Study and annual leave are built in and doctors are expected to swap shifts to go on courses etc. The rota is compliant with the EWTD 2011 requirements and the new Junior doctor contract.

Paediatric Neurology & Metabolic Medicine

The posts are based in the Evelina London Children’s Hospital at St Thomas’ Hospital. The Neurology service is the regional centre for South East Thames and the Metabolic service is a supra-regional centre for South Thames and beyond. These are very busy tertiary units with busy inpatient and outpatient facilities.

A compliment of 5 FY2-ST3 doctors are shared between the Metabolic and Neurology Services.

The Paediatric Neurology comprises of 12 acute consultants, 7 middle grades and shared compliment of 5 Neurology and Metabolic Medicine FY2-ST3. The MDT includes 1.5 dieticians and 2 clinical nurse specialists

Paediatric Inherited Metabolic Disease (IMD)

The Inherited Metabolic Disease (IMD) Team is led by 4 consultants and has 2 full-time registrars and shares the compliment of 5 Neuro-Metabolic FY2-ST3’s. The multi-disciplinary team includes 3.6 Metabolic Dietitians and 3 Clinical Nurse Specialists.

The post-holder will gain general metabolic experience including the management and investigation of encephalopathy, hyperammonaemia, hyperlactataemia, metabolic acidosis, hypoglycaemia and a wide variety of IMD’s. Sub-speciality clinics include include phenylketonuria, hyperlipidaemias and glycogen storage disorders (GSD’s).

There are weekly meetings including neuro-radiology; laboratory and academic seminar.

This is not a recognized training post but it attracts the same training opportunities, including study leave, named paediatric educational supervisor.

Paediatric Neonatology

The Neonatal Unit at Guy’s & St Thomas’ is now the largest in the South Thames Region and one of the largest in the United Kingdom, with 16 Intensive Care and 30 High Dependency/Special Care cots. There are over 7,000 births per year on-site, the majority of which are from a high risk, inner city local population. There is an academic Obstetrics and Fetal Medicine Department. A substantial number of antenatal referrals and in-utero transfers occur due to a wide range of Maternal Medicine tertiary services, including Diabetes, Lupus, Cardiology and Renal Medicine. Fetal Medicine and Fetal Cardiology services also account for many of these. We have an expansion programme taking place which will lead eventually to 22 Intensive Care, 12 High dependency and 18 Special care cots.

There is a close working relationship with subspecialties including the departments of Fetal and Paediatric Cardiology, Paediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery, Paediatric General Surgery, Paediatric Anaesthesia, Paediatric Neurology, Paediatric Nephrology & Urology, Paediatric Metabolic Medicine, ENT, Plastic Surgery (including the Regional Cleft Lip & Palate Service), Orthopaedic Surgery and Genetics.

A new 3T MRI scanner has recently opened on the unit as part of the academic department of Perinatal Imaging. This large, world-class research team are integrated within the clinical service and we are able to facilitate exceptionally high-quality research and clinical scans.

There is therefore a large throughput of complex tertiary cases on the neonatal unit, and this post offers considerable opportunities for education and advanced clinical training.

Paediatric Cardiology

The Department

The cardiac ward is based on Sky Ward on the 6th floor. It has 20 beds (8 HDU) including 6 cubicles. The ward is covered by the on-service consultant for the week and also by a dedicated ward registrar.

Our Staff

Our team of Registrar level doctors have a broad range of experience and skills. We provide sub-specialty training for cardiology registrars close to or post CCT from both within and out of our region, as well as providing further experience for senior paediatric trainees with expertise in cardiology. We also have one full time Advanced Nurse Practitioner.

Teaching

Cardiology teaching is 30 minutes every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 0800 via Teams. We are also joined by medical undergraduates from Kings College London, work experience students from the Lambeth/Southwark and international students. We have an established culture of teaching and training.

Additional Opportunities

Generally only two SHOs are required on the ward (long day for the ward and short day for pre-admissions) other educational opportunities are available on elective days by prior arrangement Echocardiography (including TOE lists) / Cath lab and theatre / MRI/CT / Surgical meeting (JCC)

The Children’s Emergency Department is located within the Emergency Department at St Thomas’ Hospital. It is audio-visually separate from the main Emergency Department and is fully staffed by childrens’ nurses and eleven Paediatric Specialty Trainees. There is a dedicated full time play specialist and also an innovative Youth Worker Liaison Service. The successful candidate would complete the team of 5 paediatric A&E SpR’s and 10 ST2/3 doctors.

The department offers weekly, protected teaching sessions in paediatric Emergency Medicine. All doctors are actively involved in audit, research and departmental management and under- and post-graduate education. The Trust also has one of the largest simulation centres in the UK with dedicated paediatric courses.

The Children’s ED provides a hospital based service to the local population. This is largely an inner city population, with a diverse social and ethnic mix. Due to our position in central London we also provide services to a large population of visitors. The department thus sees children with an exceptionally wide range of conditions. The Children’s ED works closely with the Evelina London Children’s Hospital together with its specialty services which include: General Paediatrics, Surgery, Regional PICU and emergency transport services, Cardiology, Renal, Neurology, Metabolic, Orthopaedics, ENT and Allergy. The department also receives regional paediatric surgical and plastics referrals.

The department is accredited for training in paediatric A&E by both the A&E and Paediatric Postgraduate Deaneries.

The SHO will participate in out-of hours cover for the paediatric A&E dept only. At present this is a full shift band 1A.

Paediatric Cleft FY / Junior Clinical Fellow Post:

• This is an exciting 6-month post in the Evelina London Cleft Service based at St Thomas’s Hospital that would be of interest to an FY level doctor.
• This job is suitable for those with a surgical interest as the cleft team comprises surgical consultants in Plastic Surgery, ENT Surgery, Maxillofacial Surgery.
• The general management of children from birth upwards in this role means that this post would also suit those with an interest in Paediatrics.
• There is no on call commitment but you will be required to assist with the additional weekend operating lists getting time off in lieu to compensate.
• The job is very well supported by consultants and senior registrars who have a passion for the speciality.
• There are excellent opportunities to bolster your CV and get involved with research projects or audits whilst in this post.
