Do you have a passion for caring for Adolescents? Do you have what it takes to support young people through the challenges of a hospital admission?

Ward 14 predominantly cares for young people aged 13-17 with a wide range of medical and surgical conditions. You will also play a pivitol role in supporting Children in Crisis.

Working alongside a dedicated Ward Manager, an experienced Band 5 nursing team, specisalist nurses, and the wider MDT, you will be supported in developing your knowedge, skills and experiences - particularly in caring for Children in Crisis. This will include completion of the CPI (Crisis Prevention Institute) training.

The Unit has a strong support system in place, and we encourage all staff to recieve regular clinical supervision and Professional Nurse Advocate (PNA) sessions. This supports staff in developing good communication skills, resiliance and enhances team working.

Successful applicants will be required to provide an immunisation and vaccination report, from either their current UK occupational health provider or their UK GP.

Main duties of the job

A shift/team leader, providing clinical leadership and management support, developing and evaluating best practice within the department. The post-holder will deputise for the department manager as required.

Ward 14 comprises of 12 beds. They care for young people predominantly between the ages of 13-17 who present with a wide range of medical and surgical conditions. The Ward specialises in caring for children in crisis and works closely with specialist nurses and the CAMHS.

The successful applicant will after training be expected to hold the Paediatric bleep supporting the unit, attending medical emergencies as well as supporting with Bed Management responsibilities.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Accountable for own actions in accordance with the Code of Professional Conduct. Will contribute to corporate objectives, acting within local, Trust and statutory guidelines and policies at all times.
  • Effectively communicate information regarding clinical decisions, policy and care pathways to patients/carers and the multi-professional team.
  • A skilled practitioner and clinical leader providing support to the management team, participating in service/policy development.
  • Assist in the audit of service delivery, communicate findings with others, and assist in ensuring that identified scope for improvement is implemented.
  • Designated shift Co-ordinator. Ensure appropriate support to junior team members. Management of workload on each shift, ensuring appropriate allocation of duties. Oversight for ensuring management, supervision, and support to staff to ensure coordination of clinical activities.
  • Responsible for clinical assessment of patients and provision of nursing interventions to maintain and improve the health and welfare of patients in all areas of the Paediatric Unit
  • Organisation of cross-departmental/organisational activities including HR, resource, and bleep-holder responsibilities as appropriate. This includes assisting with the operational Co-ordination of the Paediatric Unit including out of hours bed capacity management, safer staffing, and Paediatric Bleep holder responsibilities.
  • Demonstrate highly technical and/or practical skills to ensure optimum patient management including; complex patient monitoring; equipment management and frequent administration of invasive tests/procedures.
  • Develop and educate staff, participating in supervision, assessment and appraisal as required.
  • Utilise and ensure others utilise IT systems to secure accurate and timely patient, workforce and resource data available.
