We currently have an exciting opportunity for the post of Clinical Psychologist within the tertiary Paediatrics Retinoblastoma Service and Paediatric Liaison Team, based at the Royal London Children’s Hospital, Whitechapel. The Paediatric Retinoblastoma Service is a national service and the post will involve 15 hours a week working with this service and 20 hours within the wider Paediatric Liaison Team at the Royal London Children’s Hospital consisting of paediatric practitioner psychologists, child psychiatry, mental health nurse and psychotherapy.
The appointment is at a band 7 and suitable for recently qualified Clinical Psychologists or clinical psychologists currently working at Band 7 and seeking to gain experience working in paediatrics.
The successful candidate will provide specialist psychological intervention to children who have eye cancers and their families as well as offering specialist advice and consultation on the children and young peoples’ psychological care to non-psychologist colleagues and contributing to psychologically informed care as part of the MDT. The post will also include working across other paediatric specialities and general paediatrics to deliver psychological care to children and young people with acute and chronic physical health conditions as both inpatient and outpatient.
Main duties of the job
The job role will be split between offering clinical psychology input for 15 hours a week to the retinoblastoma team and 20 hours a week working with the paediatric liaison team.
The retinoblastoma team is one of two national teams who offer diagnosis and treatment of children with rare eye cancer. The team is made up surgeons, clinical nurse specialists, play specialist, support worker, opthamologist and psychologist. The majority of children seen are under the age of five years so a significant proportion of work is parent support.
The Paediatric Liaison Team is a specialist multidisciplinary team (Psychology, Psychiatry, mental health nursing and psychotherapy) that provides a psychological health service to Children’s services at Barts Health NHS Trust. The paediatric service at the Royal London Hospital is a regional service with over 70 in-patient beds and 10 specialist medical teams.The paediatric liaison team offer specialised assessment, formulations and interventions to young people with acute and chronic health conditions, both as inpatient and outpatient. They also offer advice and consultation to medical teams within the children’s hospital. The post holder will also utilise their research skills to contribute to service audit and development when needed.

Essential
- Experience of specialist psychological assessment and treatment of clients across the full range of care settings, including outpatient, community, primary care and in patient settings.
- Experience of working with a wide variety of client groups, across the whole life course presenting problems that reflect the full range of clinical severity including maintaining a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems. Experience of teaching, training and/or supervision.
Desirable
- Experience of teaching, training and/or supervision.
- Experience of the application of clinical psychology in different cultural contexts.
- Experience in a paediatric psychology setting.
Qualifications
Essential
- Doctoral level training in clinical psychology, including specifically models of clinical psychopathology, clinical psychometrics, and neuropsychology, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology, as accredited by the BPS.
Desirable
- Pre-qualification training and qualifications in research methodology, staff training and/or other fields of applied psychology
- Further training in paediatric psychology
