The post holder will be part of a dynamic and innovative trauma and orthopaedic team which is looking to appoint a keen and enthusiastic Consultant Ortho-geriatrician. The post holder will work closely with Trauma team to support fractured neck of femur surgery on site.

The candidate will work in a multi-disciplinary team approach alongside of medical staff/doctors, nurse practitioners, and allied health professionals.

Main duties of the job

Clinical responsibilities include:

• Seeing any unwell adult patients as requested by the orthopaedic team. These patients are usually directly referred by the FY1 Doctors.
• . Providing advice about the medical care of patients on the ward.
• Working with and supervising the Speciality Doctors / to ensure that patients receive care to the standard required by the Best Practice Tariff and the National Hip Fracture Database. This will include: a) Ensuring patients are seen by an Ortho geriatrician (Consultant, Speciality Doctor o) within 72 hours of admission b) Completing the standardised falls and osteoporosis assessment documents c) Attending daily "board rounds" / multidisciplinary team meetings.( Working with and supervising the Specialist Nurse for Inpatient Osteoporosis to arrange osteoporosis investigations and treatment
• Talking to patients’ relatives concerning medical problems and end of lifecare.
• Communicating about patient care with other members of the Multidisciplinary Team (including surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses, trauma coordinators, and therapists).
• Ensuring GPs are made aware of changes to long term medication (and the reasons for the changes).
• Other clinical interests e.g. outpatient clinics could be developed depending on the interests of the postholder.

Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check

As part of our commitment to safeguarding patients and staff, many roles at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT) require a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. This is a standard process across the NHS and helps us ensure a safe environment for everyone.

What is a DBS Check?

A DBS check is a background check that reveals any criminal convictions, cautions, reprimands, or warnings. The level of check required depends on the role:

Standard DBS: Checks for spent and unspent convictions, cautions, reprimands, and final warnings.

Enhanced DBS: Includes the above, plus any additional information held by local police that’s considered relevant to the role.

Enhanced with Barred Lists: Includes all of the above, plus checks against the children’s and/or adults’ barred lists.

Who Needs a DBS Check

Most roles involving direct patient contact, working with children or vulnerable adults, or access to sensitive information will require a DBS check. The job advert and recruitment team will let you know if this applies to your role.

The Costs for a DBS

At Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT), roles that require a DBS check are subject to a cost recovery policy. This means that the cost of submitting and processing a DBS application if you are successful and join us, will be deducted from your salary within the first three months of employment.   If, however, you withdraw from a conditional offer after the DBS process has begun, you will still be liable for the cost incurred.

DBS Update Service
