Main duties of the job

The appointment to this post has two main aims:

• To join a new team that provides consultant led patient-centred management of Oral Surgical conditions.
• To be a part of developing the service to deliver maximum impact to improve the wait times and experience of patients requiring oral surgery.

The appointee will be expected to share responsibility for the delivery of high-quality care to the patients presenting to the Department.

• To provide direct care to patients in both outpatient and day case sessions.
• To advise junior colleagues as required.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The Department

We are looking for enthusiastic and talented Specialist oral surgeon to join our team to develop and deliver excellent care to our local population. The department offers a supportive and encouraging environment in which to develop as a professional.

Following a period of time where the oral surgery service was paused, we are delighted to be able not to reopen the service for both adult and paediatric patients.

We are seeking to recruit a team directly employed by Stockport NHS Foundation Trust.

The need for the post

The specific aims and responsibilities of this post.

The appointment to this post has two main aims:

• To join a new team that provides consultant led patient-centred management of Oral Surgical conditions.
• To be a part of developing the service to deliver maximum impact to improve the wait times and experience of patients requiring oral surgery.

Clinical

The appointee will be expected to share responsibility for the delivery of high-quality care to the patients presenting to the Department.

• To provide direct care to patients in both outpatient and day case sessions.
• To advise junior colleagues as required.

Teaching/Training (as agreed with Clinical Director)

• To participate in the undergraduate teaching programme.
• To assist and participate with the development of staff as appropriate.
• Where agreed, to act as Educational Supervisor to junior and middle grade medical staff, being responsible for their appraisal and personal development planning.

Audit (as agreed with Clinical Director)

• To promote evidence-based practice. To respond appropriately to NICE guidance. To undertake and supervise relevant clinical audit topics
• To be involved in risk management and quality assurance.
• To remain up to date and engaged in CME/CPD as per RCS guidelines.
• To respond appropriately to complaints and critical incidents.
• The post holder will be expected to take part in developing clinical audit in accordance with agreed Directorate and Corporate Clinical Governance programmes. These build on the considerable progress already made by the Trust in clinical audit and continuous quality improvement.

Clinical Governance

• To undertake all work in accordance with Stepping Hill Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust procedures and operating policies.
• To participate in an annual Job Planning Review process.
• To participate in the Trust’s annual Appraisal process and to respond to any identified development needs.
• To adhere to the Trust’s Adverse Clinical Incident Policy.

Management (as agreed with Clinical Director)

• To provide medical information for the development of systems appropriate for Trust needs
• To participate in departmental consultant and senior staff meetings whilst remaining within the framework of the agreed strategy of the Trust and the Department
• To attend other departmental, Divisional and Trust meetings as necessary
• To attend regional and national meetings as necessary
• To undertake all work in accordance with Trust procedures and operating policies

Teamwork

• To work within the framework of team decisions.
• To take a whole system to working with the wider health community
• To show initiative, enthusiasm and flexibility

Consultant Oral Surgeon:

Currently recruiting to vacant posts.

Junior Surgical Staff:

2 Speciality Doctors

1 Jnr Clinical Fellow

Team of Dental Nurses

(iii)         Accreditation

(iv)          Prospective candidates shall have full registration and a licence to practice with the General Dental Council and

(v)           Shall have completed a minimum of 12 years dental work (either continuous period or in aggregate) since obtaining a primary dental qualification of which a minimum of six years should have been in a relevant speciality in the Speciality Doctor and or closed SAS grades. Equivalent years’ experience in a relevant speciality from other dental grades including from overseas will also be accepted.

(vi)          Shall meet the criteria set out in the Specialist Grade generic capabilities framework.

(v) This post is offered on a part-time basis.

Duties of the Post

The general clinical duties would be shared on an equal basis with the appointed team and include all duties normally expected in the management of oral surgery patients. Duties will be based at Stepping Hill.

Indicative Job plan

The contract will be offered at 0.7PA’s

This is an indicative plan to allow the appointee to commence work, and a formal plan will be agreed within three months of appointment.

Organisation of Surgical Administration

There is a well-established clinical directorate in Stockport. The Clinical Director at present is Mr Hamza Anwar, Consultant Orthodontist.

The Trust is committed to ensuring that newly appointed Specialist staff are given appropriate support within their role. This includes opportunities for the post holder to access appropriate clinical/peer mentoring.

The post holder should discuss opportunities for mentoring with their Clinical Director; this will ensure that the support available best meets the post holder’s individual needs.

The Clinical Director is accountable to the Associate Medical Director, for the business group, Ms Natasha Henley

The Associate Medical Director is accountable to the Chief Executive of the Stockport NHS Trust.

The Director of the Surgery and Critical Care business group is Karen Hatchell who is also the budget holder.

Academic.

The Trust has a positive attitude towards and encourages participation of its consultants in continuing professional development, to which the Trust provides time and funding for this purpose. The appointee is expected to participate in CPD and fulfil College requirements.

Teaching

The hospital undertakes clinical teaching of medical undergraduates from Manchester and students may visit any of the surgical departments on an ad hoc basis. This has helped to establish and maintain close links with the Medical School.

The successful candidate will be expected to offer teaching to junior doctors, medical students and other health professionals within the Trust as well as contributing to clinical meetings. From time to time the appointee may be asked to teach other professional groups.

The Integrated Education Centre has greatly enhanced the postgraduate education facilities. Many lunchtime meetings are held at present, in which the appointee would be expected to take a full and active part.

Quality and Audit

There is an active clinical audit department in the hospital with quarterly inter departmental meetings at which there is regular medical input. The department is also involved in its own internal audit and more extensive inter-departmental audit is a regular ongoing exercise.

Research

In response to recent national and regional changes of the NHS Research and Development funding, Stockport NHS Foundation Trust is currently developing an integrated R & D Strategy and R & D information and support infrastructure.

It should be noted that a Research and Development fund exists within the Trust and that a Research and Development Co-ordinator and Committee, chaired by a Consultant Epidemiologist, exists to help those with a research interest.
