Job overview

• The post holder will support the Imaging Department in delivering high-quality, individualised care to service users, their relatives and carers. They will provide safe, effective and appropriately delegated care to patients attending ophthalmology services, including outpatient clinics, theatre, ARC and outreach clinics.
• The post holder will always promote the safety, wellbeing, dignity and human rights of service users and will work in accordance with person-centred care principles. They will ensure that patients are treated with compassion, respect and sensitivity throughout their care and experience within the service.
• The post holder will be required to undertake training in the safe and effective use of a range of ophthalmic imaging and scanning equipment. This will include comprehensive in-house training and, where required by the Ophthalmology Service, attendance at relevant external courses and training programmes.
• The post holder will also undertake training with the Nursing Team to develop competency in carrying out clinical assessments and procedures, including checking visual acuity using different methods and measuring intraocular pressure (eye pressure).

Main duties of the job

To work alongside all staff in all areas of the patient pathway– ophthalmic outpatient clinics, procedure rooms, theatre, day care including admissions and discharge areas.

To undertake clinical work and related tasks as delegated by qualified nursing staff, following appropriate training and assessment of competency.

To communicate respectfully and effectively: verbally and written in a timely manner.

Understand the principle of confidentiality and communicate in a way that maintains patient privacy and dignity.

Maintain clear and legible patient records in accordance with both Trust and professional standards for record keeping.

In conjunction with the nurse in charge and other senior members of the multi-disciplinary team support a positive culture, patient experience and environment for both staff and patients.

Identify own training and development needs and undertake appropriate training/education as required.

Participate in an annual individual performance review process where objectives will be agreed, performance monitored and personal development needs discussed.

The postholder will have access to vulnerable people in the course of their normal duties and as such this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.
