This role will be working within the Ophthalmic Imaging & Diagnostics department at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital. The department supports all sub specialties within Ophthalmology by carrying out a number of different imaging services which are used to help measure, diagnose, monitor and treat patients’ eye conditions. The Ophthalmic Imaging department is undergoing a period of development and expansion to meet the needs of our patients and service users, including the implementation of various virtual clinics across various sites within the Manchester area.
We are seeking exceptional candidates to work as part of the team to provide a comprehensive imaging service at the highest standard. This is a great opportunity for Ophthalmic Science Practitioners to gain experience in all these areas in a stimulating environment with high levels of support from an experienced and committed team of professionals.
Main duties of the job
To work as part of the Ophthalmic Imaging team to provide high quality imaging service to all patients using a wide range of ophthalmic imaging techniques including:
UWF Imaging
Optical Coherence Tomography and Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography
Humphrey Visual Field Testing
Goldmann Visual Field Testing
Visual Acuity Testing
Patient History Taking
Eye drops instillation
Fundus Fluorescein Angiography
Indocyanine Green Angiography
Intraocular Pressure Measuring (GAT and iCare)
Anterior Segment OCT
Anterior Segment Imaging
Topography
Administration tasks

Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check

What is a DBS Check?
A DBS check is a background check that reveals any criminal convictions, cautions, reprimands, or warnings. The level of check required depends on the role:
Standard DBS: Checks for spent and unspent convictions, cautions, reprimands, and final warnings.
Enhanced DBS: Includes the above, plus any additional information held by local police that’s considered relevant to the role.
Enhanced with Barred Lists: Includes all of the above, plus checks against the children’s and/or adults’ barred lists.
Who Needs a DBS Check
Most roles involving direct patient contact, working with children or vulnerable adults, or access to sensitive information will require a DBS check. The job advert and recruitment team will let you know if this applies to your role.
The Costs for a DBS
At Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT), roles that require a DBS check are subject to a cost recovery policy. This means that the cost of submitting and processing a DBS application if you are successful and join us, will be deducted from your salary within the first three months of employment. If, however, you withdraw from a conditional offer after the DBS process has begun, you will still be liable for the cost incurred.

Essential
- Strong Team-work skills
- Ability to manage junior members of staff (AOSPs)
- Ability to deal with difficult and sometimes stressful situations
- Extensive knowledge of Ophthalmic Imaging capture technique
- Ability to deal with exposure to bodily fluids and distressing situations likely to occur daily
- Highly Motivated and Strong work ethic essential
- Ability to work with sometimes challenging and difficult patients
- An ability to work autonomously at times or as part of a team
Desirable
- Working knowledge of database management
Qualifications
Essential
- Level 6 qualification (Science based degree desirable but not essential) or equivalent experience

- Further Ophthalmic Course qualifications and certificates
Knowledge and Experience
Essential
- Previous experience within an Ophthalmic setting
- Knowledge of OCT/OCTA
- Knowledge of Visual Fields (Humphrey and Goldmann)
- Strong knowledge of Ophthalmic Anatomy
Desirable
- A keen interest to learn new Ophthalmic Imaging techniques.
- Knowledge of FFA/ICG Angiography
- Knowledge of the different brands of Image capture devices
- A keen interest to learn ophthalmic pathology and disease recognition
