Band 7 Senior Specialist Occupational Therapist – Inpatient Cancer Services

An exciting Band 7 opportunity has arisen to join our supportive and innovative Cancer Occupational Therapy Service within the inpatient team. We are looking for an enthusiastic Occupational Therapist with strong clinical and people management skills to join our team. We place a strong emphasis on staff development, and this post offers the opportunity to expand and advance your skills and experience in cancer assessment, rehabilitation, and symptom management across all stages of the cancer pathway. Our service offers an extensive in-service training programme, ongoing professional development opportunities, and excellent senior support.

Main duties of the job

Working closely with the OT Service Lead and other senior OTs in the team, the successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing Guy’s Hospital specialist cancer wards. The role will have a focus on supporting early assessment and intervention for patients on acute cancer wards with the aim to improve quality of patient care and patient flow. The service at times also supports wards across the Guy's site depending on service need. This will include the assessment and acute rehabilitation of their own complex caseload, as well as providing supervision and leadership to the junior team.

This post will allow you to develop and utilise your specialist clinical skills in the management of people with complex health, acute rehabilitation, and social care needs. It will also provide an excellent opportunity to develop your leadership skills, expand your professional development, and participate in the wider local and national agendas for cancer care.

Skills

Essential

  • Specialist knowledge, understanding and application of Occupational Therapy process within a cancer service relating to client centred practice.
  • Specialist knowledge, application and analysis of standardised and non standardised assessment tools.
  • Ability to work autonomously, acting decisively on behalf of self and others, setting own priorities in both a hospital and patients home environment.
  • Proven organisational and management skills.
  • Ability to manage and recognise differences of opinion in both patient related and inter-professional settings, coping positively with inter-professional tensions/ barriers.
  • Ability to prescribe adaptive equipment, assistive devices, wheelchairs, pressure cushions for patients with a variety of complex conditions

Desirable

  • Understanding of the effects of cancer treatment.

Experience

Essential

  • Evidence of Clinical experience in physical disability and knowledge of the interplay of disease process and functional well being.
  • Experience of complex rehabilitation in a physical setting
  • Experience of cancer/palliative care within a generic acute/community setting.
  • Experience of audit.
  • Ability to supervise junior staff and students.

Desirable

  • Oncology within a specialist centre / Palliative Care / Neurosciences / Frailty Mental /Health.

Knowledge/Qualifications

Essential

  • Diploma or Degree in Occupational Therapy
  • Masters level or equivalent training in specialist area or evidence of significant practical experience, research or publication in specialist area.
