The post holder will work as part of the MDT to support the delivery of excellent clinical outcomes, assessment and treatment within our older adult inpatient services under the direction of a qualified clinician. The role of the Nurse Associate is to support our clinicians and to provide quality nursing care and promote best practice. You will support the growth of students and new employees and actively contribute towards the development of Older Adult services

Main duties of the job

The Nurse Associate role is suitable for someone who is passionate and committed to providing excellent, high quality, recovery focused care to older adults in our inpatient service. You should be confident in the delivery of holistic care planning, involving our service users and enabling them to make independent choices. You will also be willing to work closely with families and carers where possible to support the pathway to recovery. You will have an aspiration for developing your clinical nursing career.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

• Adhere to the requirements outlined in the NMC professional standards for practice contained within The Standards of Proficiency for Nursing Associates.
• To work as a member of the MDT responsible for interacting constructively with team members and organising, prioritising and planning your work.
• Provide sensitive, compassionate and effective care to support service users with a range of mental health conditions.
• Recognise and work within the limits of their competence.
• Use a range of assessment tools pertinent to the service user’s needs, to inform a thorough assessment of risk that will protect both service users and staff.
• Recognise when to seek advice to manage risks or complex cases and to avoid compromising quality care. Ensuring actions are in line with local and national frameworks and legislation and that risks are reported accurately.
• Provide advice and support to service users to enable them to make informed lifestyle choices in areas such as diet, smoking and exercise.
• To assess, plan, implement and evaluate care with a supervising clinician for our service users, taking into account mental health, physical health and social circumstances.
• To contribute to the provision of care for our service users and to ensure that any care provided is done so in line with evidence-based practice and national guidelines.
• To work alongside a supervising clinician in the preparation and administration of medication and to ensure that medication protocols are complied with at all times.
• Where appropriate, feel competent to work without direct supervision, delivering care independently in line with parameters of practice of the Nursing Associate role, accessing clinical and care advice when needed.
• Interpret information and recognise situations that are beyond your knowledge and feel confident to escalate concerns to an appropriate professional.
• Prioritise and manage your own workload and recognise areas of care that you can delegate safely to other colleagues where appropriate.
• Act as a role model, and support nursing students, health care assistant and new employees.
• Ensure incidents or near misses are reported in a timely manner and that all information is accurate.
• To work collaboratively with other services, agencies and teams, to share information appropriately and ensure safe and timely discharges, continuation of excellent care and to reduce the need for readmission.
• Document and maintain accurate clinical records within the trust’s electronic records system. To support the qualified clinicians in completing key aspects of data entry on System one.
• To identify and report any concerns in regards to the potential abuse/neglect of people and carers in line with the Surrey Safeguarding Adults protocol.
• To recognise changes in a service users’ condition which may require the intervention of others and understand when to refer to your supervising clinician.
• To participate in clinical audits.

You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
