Hello, Im Erin, the Lead ADHD Nurse in Barnsley CAMHS.
Due to a promotion, we are seeking a passionate, experienced, skilled & motivated Band 7 Non-Medical Prescriber to join our ADHD pathway.
As a Non-Medical Prescriber, you will deliver high-quality, specialist ADHD care to children & young people across Barnsley.
You will manage pre- and post-diagnostic caseloads, undertake comprehensive ADHD assessments, contribute to diagnostic decision-making, & provide evidence-based interventions in line with national guidelines & best practice.
As an independent prescriber, you will initiate & manage ADHD medication, including titration & ongoing physical & mental health monitoring. You will work autonomously while collaborating closely with children, young people, families, & the wider multidisciplinary team to develop individualised treatment plans.
The role requires advanced clinical judgement to assess ADHD within the context of neurodiversity & co-morbid conditions, including complex mental health, learning, & sensory needs.

Main duties of the job
As a Band 7 Non-Medical Prescriber, you will provide expert assessment, diagnosis, and ongoing care to support children and young peoples health and wellbeing. You will lead nurse-led clinics, manage medication, and monitor progress to ensure care is safe and effective.
Working within a multidisciplinary team, you will deliver person-centred support addressing emotional, behavioural, educational, and social needs. You will provide guidance to families and schools, develop early intervention strategies, and promote best practice in ADHD care.
You will manage a caseload from referral to discharge, undertaking assessment, intervention, and prescribing with a high level of clinical autonomy. This includes physical health monitoring associated with ADHD treatment and delivering psychoeducation to parents, carers, GPs, and schools.
You will also contribute to service development, clinical governance, audit, and quality improvement initiatives, supporting the continuous development of ADHD pathways across primary and secondary care.
The role involves triaging referrals, supporting clinical decision-making, managing risk including safeguarding, and contributing to holistic care considering comorbidities and wider psychosocial needs.
You will provide clinical supervision, support workforce development, and contribute to training, teaching, and improving access to ADHD assessment and treatment.

JOB SUMMARY
The Post Holder will work as part of the Barnsley CAMH services and support the Locality teams in developing alternative ways of working through the introduction of Non Medical Prescribing
The post holder will practice as a non-medical prescriber (independent/supplementary prescribing) in accordance with the Trusts non-medical prescribing policy and protocols
Prescribe as an independent/supplementary prescriber within ones scope of competency
and in accordance with Trust and national policies
Following national training and a period of actively prescribing as a supplementary
prescriber, to work as an independent non-medical prescriber within the designated areas
of clinical practice
Be responsible and accountable for the assessment of the patient with diagnosed and
undiagnosed conditions and for decisions about the clinical management required including prescribing as agreed with Consultant Psychiatrist
This job description is an outline of the main duties of the post. The postholder will be required to undertake other duties commensurate with the grade as directed.
The content of this post will be reviewed in consultation with the postholder when necessary and in line with the service developments.
KEY RESULT AREAS:
The post holder will work across the localities supporting an agree caseload. The post holder will:-
- Provide advice and support to other clinicians acting as a source of expertise
- Prescribe for the patient mental health needs and the management of drug-related complications within their own sphere of competence
- Promote the health needs of clients with complex issues and within their sphere of
competence provide interventions for these needs
- Promote clinical excellence by complying with agreed Trust and statutory policies and clinical guidance, while maintaining own clinical competencies in this role
- Work in close collaboration with medical personnel regarding prescribing protocols, policies etc. and where necessary work closely with the independent prescriber in developing and delivering clinical management plans for clients
- Work within relevant NMC/RPSGB and any other appropriate statutory requirements
- Work as an independent non-medical prescriber within areas as required and designated, taking responsibility for the clinical assessment of the patient, establishing a diagnosis and
the clinical management required
- Be responsible for stopping or prescribing where necessary and the appropriateness of any
prescription issue being responsible for prescribing a range of drugs within their
competence in accordance with the Trust protocols and British National Formulary (BNF)
- Carry out appropriate risk assessment regarding prescribing and non-prescribing
interventions and implement appropriate interventions to manage the risks
- Write prescriptions in accordance with Trust policy taking full responsibility for the patient as well as for the medicines prescribed as agreed with the medical prescriber
- Ensure that appropriate records are made in the patients RIO notes which identify
postholder as the independent/supplementary prescriber
- Ensure that a GP is notified when a patient is seen as an out-patient in the event that the
prescription is changed in accordance with service policies
- Responsibility for ensuring that the non-medical prescribing is recorded in line with Trust policy and procedures
- Communicate fully to those patients who are unable to communicate or give consent,
ensuring that the benefits of non-medical prescribing are documented fully and to provide
reassurance to both the patient and the carer that postholder is fulfilling the role of the doctor in this regard, including providing patient information leaflet
- Assist with the development of policies and inform development of non-medical prescribing
across the Trust
- Take the lead on policy, procedural development and patient information development of non-medical prescribing across the CAMH Service
- Undertake auditing and monitoring of prescribing in postholders own designated areas of
Practice
- Be responsible for ensuring the security and safe handling of FP10 prescription forms and to report any loss or theft as per Trust guidelines
- as an independent non-medical prescriber, prescribe medication as an independent prescriber within their own sphere of competence and the bounds of their approved prescribing status in accordance with the Trust non-medical prescribing policy.
- Promote patient choice and understanding when communicating assessment outcomes or prescribing medicines, including provision of high quality information both written and verbal to support this.
- In the event of adverse drug reaction, to be accountable for ensuring that the GP/Consultant is advised accordingly
- Participate in patient satisfaction survey design and obtain feedback on patients views on
non-medical prescribing
- Act as a mentor and guide for supplementary non-medical prescribers and to provide clinical supervision, ensuring that any short falls/concerns form part of the CPD
- Be accountable for ensuring that training, CPD and clinical supervision sustains independent prescribing status
- Request necessary clinical investigations such as blood tests and communicate results to all appropriate clinicians
- Provide/ refer for appropriate health and social care interventions according to service users recovery Goals
- Assess health and social care needs as part of an integrated team, and implement /request packages of care where appropriate
Service Governance Responsibilities
- Required to contribute to clinical audit and clinical governance
- Participate in a formal appraisal programme and provide support for
lower banded staff
- Ensure fulfilment of requirements for continuing professional development as required by
professional body, eg NMC/RPSGB and as outlined in local and national non-medical
prescribing policy (the organisation will support CPD through annual appraisal/job plan
reviews and personal development plans with the designated non-medical prescribing lead)
- Attend and provide training events as necessary to maintain knowledge/skills and
competence of self and others
- Work within locally and national agreed guidance for best practice
- Work at all times only within their sphere of competence
- Participate in trust forums and networks for non medical prescribers to support and update
on service development/legislative changes and pharmaceutical updates
