JOB SUMMARY
This post is to provide Intensive Care sessions which are based in Antrim’s 10 bedded unit, in addition to out of hours rota cover. Partner specialty sessions in anaesthesia and emergency medicine are already agreed options but applicants with a different partner specialty are encouraged to speak to the CD prior to application to allow the department to explore potential to accommodate sessions in the relevant specialty. As an example Anaesthetic sessions can be across Midulster, Whiteabbey and Antrim sites and are included in the example job plan later.
Time will be available within the job plan for quality improvement, audit, teaching, administration and research.
Antrim Anaesthetic and ICM Services
The Northern Trust is one of five Health and Social Care trusts in Northern Ireland. We provide a range of Health and Social Care services to a population of approximately 479,000 people across a geographical area of 1,733 square miles, making it the largest geographical Trust in Northern Ireland. The Trust also provides services to Rathlin, the only inhabited island off the coast of Northern Ireland.
Critical care has recently moved into refurbished 10 bedded footprint adjacent to the main theatre complex, and has capacity to provide for six level 3 and three level 2 patients or equivalent, with a mixture of medical and surgical specialties represented. The service is consultant led, with the support of a multidisciplinary team. The unit contributes to the ICNARC Case Mix Program, the Critical Care Network Northern Ireland (CCaNNI) and is actively involved in research projects within NI Clinical Research Network as well as the teaching and training of intensive care, anaesthetic trainees and medical trainees. Out of hours consultant cover is provided for Antrim Hospital by two separate rotas – ICU (this post) and theatres/delivery suite consultant anaesthetist rota. Where a major paediatric trauma or resuscitation comes in, it is expected that both consultants on-call will attend.
Antrim Anaesthetic department currently provides the following services
Anaesthesia for elective and emergency cases
Obstetric anaesthesia and analgesia
Consultant and Nurse led preoperative assessment
Anaesthetic antenatal clinic
Anaesthesia for ECT
Paediatric CT&MRI service
Acute and chronic pain service
Intensive care/High dependency (6 level 3, 3 level 2)
Critical care outreach
PACU service (3 beds currently in use Monday to Saturday)
Currently there are 25 consultants, 1 associate specialist and 8 specialty doctors delivering Anaesthetic and Critical Care services in the Antrim Anaesthetic department. There are 14 consultants contributing to the theatres and obstetric oncall rota and 9 on the ICU oncall rota. A mixture of 18 medical, ACCS and Anaesthetic trainees rotate through the department providing 3 tiers of oncall cover. Working as a team they cover ICU, theatres, maternity, and resus/ward referrals.
Services are provided across 3 sites
Antrim Area Hospital - 4 inpatient theatres, 1 day surgery theatre, ICU, and PACU.
Mid Ulster Hospital - 2 day surgery theatres
Whiteabbey hospital - 2 day surgery theatres and Preassessment

Introduction to the Anaesthetic and ICM Department
After starting in post, there will be a number of measures put in place to ensure you feel supported in commencing the role as a consultant in Intensive Care medicine within the department. Meetings will be arranged as part of corporate induction to ensure you know the wider team. Furthermore, there will be time in the first few weeks with a lighter clinical workload to familiarise yourself with the role, the departmental SOPs and policies including the Trust’s approach to wellbeing. Finally, there will be a number of weeks before your first oncall and you will have a buddy (consultant colleague) assigned to assist you with that. Your job plan will be reviewed within the first 6 months.
Consultants on appointment will be provisioned with a trust laptop and allocated a shared office space with team SPA days spread across the week to facilitate this.
KEY RESULT AREAS / MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
Provide safe Critical Care for service users.
Share responsibility with colleagues for the management and proper running of the intensive care unit and relevant partner specialty department.
Participate in night and weekend on-call rota for the Intensive care rota in Antrim Area Hospital
Participate in clinical teaching of doctors in training, medical students, nurses and nursing students and allied health professionals.
Participate in clinical audit and M&M
Be encouraged to undertake research
Be encouraged to develop a special interest which the department can accommodate.
Undertake administrative duties of the department
Assist in running the department during temporary leave or absence of consultant colleagues
Be required to participate in continuing medical education for which study leave and expenses are available.
GENERAL MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES
Ensure the appropriate governance and risk management arrangements are in place for the services you are responsible for and take appropriate action to identify and manage risk and to maintain safety of users, staff and others in accordance with relevant regulations, policies and procedures;
It is essential to ensure that the highest standards of infection prevention and control are maintained to ensure patient and client safety and maintain confidence in the Trust. As a Clinical Leader, you must ensure that you implement all instructions/ policy in this area and that all staff are made aware of and fully comply with these;
Promote a culture of continuous service improvement amongst the team, encouraging their participation and that of service users in reviewing and modernising current services and in service development;
Make sure you are trained and competent in the relevant policies and procedures which apply to the management of staff and other resources and abide by these policies; seeking advice as necessary from senior management or specialist staff as necessary;
Communicate effectively with staff and maintain productive working relationships amongst your staff and with others;
Delegate appropriate responsibility and authority to staff in order to ensure optimum and effective service delivery and decision-making, whilst retaining overall accountability and responsibility for outcomes;
Promote a culture of learning and development and facilitate arrangements for and participate in training and development of staff as agreed for the performance of their duties. Where training is in accordance with relevant standards make sure you have the relevant competences in order to carry out this responsibility;
Promote equality of opportunity for all by personal action, both in the management of your staff and in the provision of care to service users in accordance with the Trust’s Equality of Opportunity Policy and Equality Scheme;
Take responsibility for ensuring appropriate standards of environmental cleanliness and for encouraging staff to maintain standards in their work area. Have an awareness of environmental issues and take appropriate action, for example to ensure the efficient use of energy and other resources, recycling etc.;
Make sure that staff are aware of Trust policies regarding the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018, the Freedom of Information Act 2000, the Environmental Information Regulations 2004 and Records Management and that they must not disclose, withhold, retain or dispose of any information unless legally authorised.

SALARY
£110,681 - £145,517 per annum (pro-rata for part-time)

PAY PROTECTION
