A full time (10 PA) post as a Consultant in Neurology and Stroke Medicine is available at Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust. The post will be based at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, although there will be service commitments in Neurology at Amersham hospital and Stroke/TIA at Wycombe Hospital. There are opportunities to be part of the Stroke team with commitments in Stroke on call and ND TIA clinic service.
Experience of working in Neurology at a consultant level and appropriate accreditation is desirable. It is expected that the candidate has sufficient experience in stroke & TIA, stroke thrombolysis including acute interpretation of CTA and thrombectomy decision making. Candidates with good experience will be considered including candidates who have submitted their paperwork for CESR and are awaiting accreditation to be included in the Specialist Register in Neurology.
Main duties of the job
The Programmed Activities (10 PA) will be agreed with the SDU director and will form the basis of the job plan. The job plan is not fixed and can be further negotiated by the successful candidate, providing the needs of the service are met. The trust actively participates in job planning prospectively – every year in advance from January to December
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Out-patient clinics are based on a template of 30 min for a new patient (8 patients per clinic) and 25 min for a Follow-up patient (9 patients per clinic). Acute Neurologist of week is 1:4 covering SDEC clinic, A&G and ward referrals.
On-calls for Stroke - weekends are on a 1 in 16 basis (1:8 commitments can be accommodated). Weekend on calls is Friday to Sunday, and over Saturday and Sunday the consultant is expected to be on-site from 9am – 5pm and to do a HASU ward round, review all acute stroke admissions and run a ND TIA clinic (up to 4 patients). On-call overnight is via telephone.
The expectation is that any SPA time beyond 1PA (Core SPA) will be timetabled, on site, and linked to clear objectives and measurable outputs. This might be, for example, a governance lead role, education role, research role or service development role. SPA time will be job planned once there is evidence that the successful candidate is participating and engaging in the activities – example – Educational Supervisor. The maximum SPA for a consultant in the trust is 2.0 PAs.
The Trust will provide appropriate secretarial support and office space with desk and laptop. Adequate support will be provided for revalidation. The Trust has a policy of allocating a “buddy” to newly appointed Consultant doctor to provide advice/support. This will be a consultant colleague from the consultant’s SDU and will be identified by the SDU lead following the appointment being made.
