In this pivotal role, you'll provide expert advice and support on safeguarding issues, acting as a key resource for the multidisciplinary team. You'll champion best practice, share your specialist knowledge, and empower colleagues through education and training tailored to those working in maternity care.

As the Named Midwife for Safeguarding, you' will play a vital part in shaping and driving forward our safeguarding agenda. You'll work closely with the Head of Safeguarding, Directorate and frontline staff to uphold our duty to protect children from harm, while ensuring our policies and guidelines remain current, evidence-based, and aligned with national standards.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will:

Hold the Named Midwife for Safeguarding role for the Trust and will work closely with the Named Doctors for Safeguarding Children and Young People (as required) in supporting all activities necessary to ensure that the Trust meets its statutory responsibilities in safeguarding children as defined in Working Together to Safeguard Children 2023 and the Children Act 1989 and the Children Act 2004.

The Named Midwife will participate in partnership working including the Local Safeguarding Children’s Boards sub-groups as appropriate.

Together with the other Named Safeguarding Professionals for Adults and Children, advise police, social care, and other agencies on health matters regarding safeguarding children in the hospital and hospital outreach services.

To ensure safe and robust safeguarding systems and processes are in place across the Trust in relation to safeguarding children and young people.

To provide expert advice to the Trust Board in matters relating to Child Protection and Safeguarding Children.

Support the safeguarding team in delivering quality services.

Assist with the development of processes and procedures for safeguarding ensuring that prevention of abuse and safeguarding systems are in place to minimise risk.

Deliver a quality service to people with care and support needs. Increase the skills and confidence of trust staff to manage people with safeguarding concerns more confidently.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

As a Named Midwife for Safeguarding, the post holder will work within Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS FT supporting the Head of Safeguarding to ensure that comprehensive and robust arrangements are in place for vulnerable children and families alongside supporting staff in meeting their legal obligations in relation to the Care Act, Children’s Act and Mental capacity Act.
