Job summary

We are looking for a compassionate, motivated and skilled Band 6 Midwife to join our Maternity Services team within Somerset NHS Foundation Trust. In this rewarding role, you will provide high quality, personalised and evidence-based care to women, birthing people and their families throughout the antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal periods.

As an autonomous practitioner, you will support the delivery of safe and equitable maternity care across both hospital and community settings, whilst promoting informed choice, physiological birth where appropriate, and positive outcomes for women, babies and families.

You will work as part of a multidisciplinary team alongside midwives, obstetricians, anaesthetists, neonatal colleagues, health visitors, safeguarding teams and other healthcare professionals. The successful candidate will also contribute to mentoring students and junior staff, service improvement initiatives and the ongoing development of maternity services.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide the full range of antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care for women, birthing people and their babies.
  • Assess, plan, implement and evaluate individualised care programmes, ensuring care is safe, evidence-based and woman-centred.
  • Promote physiological birth and support women and birthing people to make informed choices throughout their maternity journey.
  • Recognise and respond appropriately to complications, clinical deterioration and obstetric emergencies, escalating concerns when required.
  • Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team to deliver high standards of maternal and neonatal care.
  • Provide leadership, supervision and support to student midwives, newly qualified staff and support workers.
  • Act as an advocate for women and families, ensuring dignity, respect and safeguarding principles are embedded in practice.
  • Maintain accurate and timely clinical records in line with Trust standards and professional requirements.
  • Participate in audit, quality improvement, patient safety initiatives and incident reporting activities.
  • Contribute to the delivery of a 24-hour maternity service, including participation in the on-call rota.

Job responsibilities

The Band 6 Midwife will provide high-quality, compassionate and evidence-based care to women, birthing people and their babies throughout the antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal period. The role includes providing leadership and support to students, newly qualified colleagues and support staff, acting as a professional role model and contributing to the ongoing development of maternity services. You will maintain accurate clinical records, participate in audit and quality improvement activities, and ensure practice remains aligned with current evidence, national standards and the NMC Code.

You will demonstrate excellent communication skills, a commitment to safeguarding and patient safety, and a passion for delivering safe, personalised maternity care. Participation in the 24-hour service, including the on-call rota, is required.
