We are pleased to support experienced midwives stepping into a Band 6 role at Croydon Hospital, where you will play a key part in delivering high-quality, safe and compassionate maternity care. This role offers the opportunity to further develop your clinical expertise while taking on leadership, coordination and mentoring responsibilities within a supportive and dynamic maternity team.

As a Band 6 midwife at Croydon, you will work autonomously and collaboratively to provide evidence-based care to women, birthing people, babies and their families across the maternity pathway. You will also support the coordination of clinical areas and contribute to the smooth running of the service,  effective communication and timely decision-making.

You will work across a range of clinical settings, including:

Antenatal care Intrapartum care Postnatal care (ward and community)

In addition, you will support and mentor junior staff and students, contribute to service development, and promote a culture of continuous learning, safety and excellence in maternity care.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The Band 6 Rotational Midwife will provide high-quality, evidence-based, woman-centred care throughout the maternity pathway, working across all maternity clinical areas including Labour Ward, Maternity Triage, Birth Centre, Antenatal and Postnatal Wards, Day Assessment Unit and Community Services where appropriate.

The post holder will practise autonomously within the NMC Code, providing safe care for women and babies with both low- and high-risk pregnancies, recognising deviations from normal and escalating concerns appropriately.

Key responsibilities include:

• Delivering compassionate, safe and evidence-based midwifery care throughout pregnancy, labour, birth and the postnatal period.
• Assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating individualised care, promoting informed choice and personalised care.
• Recognising and responding promptly to obstetric and neonatal emergencies, participating in emergency drills and multidisciplinary training.
• Supporting, supervising and acting as a role model for Band 5 Midwives, Student Midwives and Maternity Support Workers.
• Acting as a Practice Supervisor and/or Practice Assessor in accordance with NMC standards.
• Maintaining accurate electronic patient records and ensuring timely documentation.
• Participating in clinical audit, incident reporting, quality improvement initiatives and implementation of learning to enhance patient safety.
• Promoting public health initiatives including infant feeding, smoking cessation, perinatal mental health, safeguarding, vaccination and healthy lifestyle advice.
• Maintaining competence through mandatory training and continuous professional development, including CTG interpretation, PROMPT, Newborn Life Support and safeguarding.
• Working collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team and external agencies to deliver seamless, high-quality maternity care.
