Job description
The post holder will be a member of a multidisciplinary team delivering mental healthcare to services users within the Southern Trust. The post holder will work as part of a team, to provide person centred nursing care to a designated case load of service users/allocated patient group.
Hours of work and locality shall be dependent on available posts within the Directorate, flexibility may be required.
Registered Mental Health Nurse, Band 5, Mental Health and Disability Services. The post reports to the Team Leader/Ward Manager and is accountable to the Head of Service.
Main duties and responsibilities
- Comply with all policies, procedures, clinical protocols, standards and guidelines based on legislation, evidence based nursing practice and NMC code.
- To engage in areas of Clinical and Social Care Governance in the context of his / her role.
- Provide quality care to patients /service users in partnership with family and carers.
- Report to and liaises with the nurse in charge / team leader who is responsible for supervision of workload.
- Ensures accurate record keeping as per Trust policy and NMC Guidelines.
- Adhere to adult safeguarding procedures and UNOCINI child protection procedures.
- Work in accordance with the MCA NI 2016 demonstrate an understanding of its functions including Deprivation of Liberty.
- Promote the ethos of Think Family and undertake the Family Model Conversation.
- To co-operate and work effectively with other professionals in the multi-disciplinary team and community services to ensure continuity of care.
- Adhere to the Medicines Management Code and NMC Standards for the safe keeping and administration of medication.
- Contribute to data collection.
- Be cost effective in the use of resources.
- Co-operate fully with the implementation of the Trusts Health & Safety arrangements, reporting accidents/incidents to the nurse in charge / team leader, and initiating a full investigation in a timely manner, whilst taking responsibility to complete appropriate documentation.

- Promote self-care and independence delivering Interventions with a focus towards recovery.
- Support the training of qualified staff, health care assistants, and student nurses, ensuring compliance to the NMC standards for student’s supervision and assessment.
- Provide support, guidance and supervision to junior staff as required.
- Administer medications as per relevant medication management policies and procedures.
- Maintain and develop professional expertise and knowledge, continuous professional development and delivery of evidence based practice.
- Maintain professional registration through reflection and the NMC revalidation process.
- Support patients in the promotion of good physical health and ensure physical health is monitored as per best practice guidance.
- Undertake clinical tasks as required inclusive of administration of injections, venepuncture and ECG’s and clinical observations.
- Provide health promotion aimed to enhance the mental health and well-being of patients/clients.
- Deliver a range of evidence based psychological and psychosocial interventions as appropriate to the needs of the patient/client.
- Adhere to procedures and protocols on moving and handling in line with current legislation.
