Inclusion Drug and Alcohol Services are delighted to be supporting a new full-time trainee Mental Health and Wellbeing Practitioner role, with the required training course planned to start on 5th January 2027.

Over the 12-month training period individuals will attend study at University of Sussex (in person and remote learning) as well as spending time working clinically in a Drug and Alcohol service. These are exciting roles created by NHSEWTE to support the transformation of community mental health and drug and alcohol services. Your training will be fully funded, and you will be eligible for a full-time qualified permanent position on completion of the training course. In return, we ask that you commit to staying with us for at least two years after you qualify.

The successful candidate will be required to work across our sites in the North of Hampshire (including Aldershot, Basingstoke and Andover)

During the 12 months training this role will be paid at band 4 AFC. On successful completion of training the role will move to a band 5 position and offered as a permanent post.

Main duties of the job

As a trainee MHWP you will, under supervision,

• Work within a drug and alcohol service when not completing the programme of study.
• Complete all aspects of the taught programme of study and progress successfully through all aspects of appraisal related to this.
• Develop and practice psychologically-informed interventions (not therapy) under supervision, with adults in our service and our communities.
• Support collaborative care and treatment packages, alongside other members of the multi-disciplinary team.
• Develop caring, supportive, and empathic relationships with people using our services who may be in significant distress alongside guiding towards partner services which may benefit them or their families/carers.
• You will need to have flexibility and adaptability and a passion for working with adults with complex needs. Additionally, you may have some knowledge of substance misuse work and feel passionate about supporting this client group.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post-holder will work in a defined drug and alcohol service and work within a specific location, whilst undertaking a programme of training for this role.

These posts are suitable for people with a degree or equivalent qualifications, who have the right personal qualities. As a Trainee Mental Health and Wellbeing Practitioner, you will be expected to work under supervision as part of a community drug and alcohol service, supporting people to receive the right care and delivering psychologically informed interventions.

During the one-year graduate certificate or postgraduate certificate training, you will, under supervision, develop knowledge and practice skills to employ wellbeing-focused psychologically informed interventions for adults individually and in groups, with specific focus on clients who are or have been affected by substance misuse problems.

• Behavioural Activation and Graded Exposure using the "GOALS" programme
• Problem-solving
• Improving sleep
• Recognising and managing emotions
• Confidence building
• Support with medicines management
