Job summary

The Mental Health Act is complex and interesting. Understanding those complexities and maintaining an interest is essential to the success of the role. This is a Band 4 role as it holds with it the delegated responsibility from the Trust Board for compliance with those complexities. The Trust expects to receive a service that delivers and is responsive not only to service demands but also to changes in legislation.

The Mental Health Act Office undertakes to deliver that service, the work itself is relentless but ensures the Trusts compliance with the legalities of both the Act itself and the associated Code of Practice. Under the direction of the Senior Mental Health Act Administrator and direct management of the Deputy to the above, the Mental Health Act Administrator is expected to provide a professional, efficient and seamless service to the Trust in accordance with the provisions of the Act.

Main duties of the job

  • Deliver Mental Health Act (MHA) services in line with legislative, procedural and Trust Delegation (2026) requirements with minimal supervision.
  • Receive, scrutinise and arrange rectification of statutory forms in accordance with legislation.
  • Provide or obtain advice on MHA legislation and ensure legal and organisational reporting requirements are met.
  • Support the Tribunal Service and MHA Managers Panel with the administration of patient hearings.
  • Maintain monitoring systems and electronic patient records, ensuring information is accurate, current and accessible.
  • Work collaboratively with clinical and non-clinical staff to meet local and national requirements.
  • Complete incident reporting and support the sharing of lessons learned where appropriate.
  • Liaise with external organisations and stakeholders within areas of responsibility.
  • Respond professionally and sensitively to enquiries from patients, relatives and carers.
  • Promote the Mental Health Act Office service internally and externally.
  • Support the production and reporting of MHA data.
  • Contribute as an integral member of the Mental Health Act Office team, providing cover for colleagues as required.
  • Assist with staff induction, training and development, offering guidance and support where appropriate.
  • Work flexibly to maintain effective office cover and attend occasional meetings as required.
