We are really excited to offer this opportunity to apply for Senior Medicines Management Technician in Cancer Services at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust.

You’ll be working as an integral member of an established Cancer Pharmacy team in one of the UK’s largest and busiest Cancer centres.

You will join an existing team, working alongside other senior MMTs, MMA, specialist cancer and junior rotational pharmacists, nursing staff, doctors and patients. You will have chance to develop your expertise and support the wider cancer team.

The team provides pharmacy services to oncology, haematology and specialist admissions wards as well as the Teenage and Young Adult unit.

NUH is now a fully commissioned CAR-T centre. The cancer team at NUH are looking for a highly motivated colleague to join our integrated forward-thinking service in the provision of an NHS-England accredited CAR-T program. This is an exciting opportunity to join a leading centre at the forefront of research and clinical innovation in haemato-oncology which will provide the CAR-T service for the East Midlands.

The role will include:

Facilitating smooth transfer of cancer medication related issues across the interface, prior to and at admission, transfer and discharge.

Medication management at ward level, including complex medicines history taking, patient counselling, stock management, controlled drugs and high cost drugs. You will be responsible for ensuring compliance with the pregnancy prevention plan associated with specific cancer drugs.

Opportunities to be involved in quality improvement projects involving cancer drugs and clinical audits.

Working with the patient, their carers and primary care colleagues to support the Discharge Medicines Service and safe ongoing medicines use.

Supporting the wider Pharmacy Team with weekend working and allocated dispensary slots (approximately 2 hours per week).

KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Ward Based Activities

To support the Clinical Pharmacists by participating in the provision of a high quality, professional and effective medicine management service within the clinical directorates

To participate in the full programme of validated checking and training schemes in accordance with agreed protocols.

Liaise with ward and pharmacy staff to resolve any technical queries or problems with the patients, refers clinical queries to the pharmacist for resolution.

To participate in ward-based audit schemes or other forms of research and development.

To participate in the controlled drug retrieval of patients own medication and expired or unused ward stock from wards and daycase areas. To check CD register balances and balance transfers to new CD registers. To help support the quarterly CD audits.

To work closely with the specialist clinical pharmacists to promote the safe and cost-effective use of medicines, including high-cost drugs, in order to optimise patient care, reduce waste, promote adherence to clinical guidelines and support effective medicines management and optimisation.

To monitor the use of medicines on the oncology and haematology wards in order to facilitate the review and amendment of stock-lists to ensure appropriate and cost-efficient stockholding, in liaison with the specialist pharmacists and ward staff.

To assist the specialist clinical pharmacists in implementing, and appropriate monitoring, of medicines cost-containment strategies within cancer services.

To support the pharmacy finance team to ensure adherence to patient access schemes in oncology and haematology, where appropriate.

To be involved in the training of new clinical pharmacy ward staff and the revalidation process of existing MMTs.

To perform drug histories for CAR-T patients in clinic prior to commencing treatment.

Pharmacy Satellites/Dispensaries

To undertake a regular operational commitment (approximately 2 hours per week) in order to maintain competencies and demonstrate fitness to practice as a registered pharmacy technician. This is to include dispensing (including controlled drugs and cytotoxic drugs), accuracy checking (including controlled drugs and oral cytotoxic) and utilisation of the pharmacy computer system.

To be involved in the training of Technical and ATO staff in the satellite/dispensaries. This may include undertaking competency assessments for: all new starters, trainee accuracy checkers and current accuracy checkers, ensuring that new staff inductions are carried out promptly and signed off for forwarding to the training team. This will be carried out during your allocated dispensary slots.

To participate in the NVQ training and assessment process of Student Technicians within the satellite/ dispensaries. This will be carried out during your allocated dispensary slots.

To assist in the management of the day-to-day stock holding in the satellite/ dispensaries, ensuring procedures are followed to maintain accurate stock balance; and identify, investigating and reconciling stock discrepancies in a timely manner. This will be carried out during your allocated dispensary slots.

To utilise the Pharmacy IT systems as required by ICT to facilitate stock control and patient information. This will be carried out during your allocated dispensary slots.

Other Duties

To take line management responsibility for designated staff.

The pharmacy department operates a 7-day shifted working model which will include weekends and Bank Holidays.

Shifted and bank holiday duties: To participate in departmental weekend, bank holiday and late duty working as required. At the time of advertising, the weekend rota encompasses 2 half-day shifts every 4/5 weeks at the city campus or 1 full day shift every 4 weeks at the QMC campus. In addition, the post holder will participate in a system of flexible shifts to facilitate NUH pharmacy opening times.
