We are looking for enthusiastic, reliable and detail-focused individuals to join our Microbiology laboratory team at Wye Valley NHS Trust. This is a Band 3 role with a development pathway. We also welcome applications from experienced Medical Laboratory Assistants looking to further develop their skills, as well as candidates with no previous laboratory experience who will be supported to progress. Applicants without relevant experience will be appointed at Band 2 and supported to progress to Band 3 on successful completion of required competencies within an agreed timeframe. As a Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA), you will play a vital role in supporting diagnostic services by preparing and processing patient samples that directly inform patient care. Full training and ongoing development will be provided. This role includes participation in a 24/7 service, including evening, weekend and shift working.

Main duties of the job

Main duties of the role

  • Receive, sort and register patient samples accurately
  • Ensure patient and test details are correctly recorded
  • Prepare and process specimens following standard procedures
  • Use laboratory equipment such as centrifuges and analysers
  • Maintain laboratory cleanliness and stock levels
  • Package and prepare samples for referral
  • Monitor equipment such as fridges and freezers
  • Follow health, safety and infection control procedures
  • Work closely with Biomedical Scientists and Pathology teams
  • Handle routine enquiries from wards and GP practices

Development and progression

We are committed to supporting your development. Structured training and competency-based support will be provided. Progression from Band 2 to Band 3 is dependent on achieving required competencies within an agreed timeframe. All MLAs are expected to achieve and maintain competencies appropriate to the role, with support and review in line with Trust policies.
