Job overview

We are seeking an exceptional clinical leader to join The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust (SaTH) as our Medical Director. This is a pivotal role, providing professional leadership to the medical workforce and driving the delivery of safe, high‑quality and compassionate care for our communities.

Working closely with Executive Directors, Divisional, Deputy and Associate Medical Directors, nursing leadership, senior managers and system partners, you will play a central role in strengthening quality, safety and clinical effectiveness across the organisation. You will help shape our strategic direction, support transformation programmes and ensure the Trust meets its regulatory and professional obligations.

The portfolio includes leadership of medical workforce and standards, education and research, legal services, clinical audit, Medical Examiner services, appraisal and revalidation, and the wider Medical Directorate.

This is an outstanding opportunity for an experienced and credible medical leader who is committed to improving care, supporting colleagues and driving forward a culture of excellence.

Main duties of the job

  • Serve as the Trust’s Responsible Officer, accountable for medical appraisal, revalidation and ongoing professional assurance. Act as Caldicott Guardian, ensuring lawful, appropriate and confidential use of patient information.
  • Provide senior medical leadership across the Trust, setting and upholding high standards of clinical care and professional practice.
  • Lead the medical workforce, including postgraduate and undergraduate education, clinical governance, continuous professional development, and all medical appraisal and revalidation processes in line with regulatory requirements.
  • Oversee conduct and capability matters for medical and dental staff, ensuring compliance with Trust policies, MHPS and legal obligations.
  • Lead learning from deaths, including oversight of the Medical Examiner function and associated governance. Provide leadership for clinical audit to support assurance, learning and service improvement.
  • Hold professional line responsibility for Divisional, Deputy and Associate Medical Directors. Oversee legal services relating to medical practice in collaboration with corporate teams. (The legal portfolio balance across the Group is currently subject to review.)
  • Work collaboratively with Executive Directors, senior leaders, corporate services and system partners to deliver Trust and Group objectives and support transformation programmes.
