Job overview

The post holder will be a valued member of the team working in partnership with and assisting midwives and the wider multi-agency teams in the care of pregnant people and their families in the community setting.

You will work with diverse groups of pregnant people to assess, deliver, evaluate and implement agreed programs of care with supervisory guidance from a registered midwife within agreed policies and protocols.

The post holder will have been assessed as competent to complete the duties and responsibilities.

Main duties of the job

  • To provide care that respects people's privacy, dignity, culture and ethnicity, maintaining appropriate confidentiality in a variety of settings.
  • Participate in health promotion activities.
  • Support the Midwife in providing a wide range of parent education appropriate to the needs of birthing people and their partners to actively engage and be responsible for their own health and well-being and that of their baby.
  • Perform relevant observations.
  • Obtain, collect and deliver a range of samples ensuring full and accurate labelling.
  • Assist in the implementation of packages of care with families,
  • Maintain clear, accurate, legible and timely written documentation in birthing person's maternity electronic patient records, observing and reporting any changes in a birthing person's condition to the Midwife.
  • Be able to respond calmly in an emergency situation assisting the midwife with obstetric and neonatal emergencies. Have an understanding of the procedures to summon clinical and emergency support.
  • In partnership with the admin support, undertake general clerical work to include booking appointments, entering data on to the computer, maintaining notice boards.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Assist the midwife providing health education advice; undertaking venepuncture; making appointments.
  • Assist in some observations as requested by the midwife for example taking blood pressure; as appropriate to the role.
  • Assist the midwife with parent education as appropriate.
  • Implement packages of care with families, which include providing assistance/advice regarding feeding, hygiene, safety and support the establishment of parenting skills.
  • Assist and advise the birthing person on infant care to enable her to ensure optimum progress and well-being of the newborn infant.
  • Participate in health promotion activities including smoking cessation, diet, breast feeding and parenting skills.
  • Assist the birthing person with their choice of infant feeding ensuring adherence to the Trust Baby Friendly Policy.
  • Ensuring the booking line remains up to date, records are matched and appointments made within the recommended timescale,

Person specification

QUALIFICATIONS / TRAINING

Essential

  • English and Math GCSE grade 9-2 (A*-E) or equivalent or high level of literacy and numeracy skills demonstrated within application
  • Competence based level 3 qualification e.g. NVQ or Diploma in Care or The Care Certificate issued by an employer or relevant clinical experience
  • Willingness to undertake any training or development relevant to the role

Desirable

  • BFI training or equivalent
  • Basic counselling skills/training
  • Smoking cessation training
  • Training in child protection/ safeguarding procedures
  • Training in a recognised parenting skills course

KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE & EXPERTISE

Essential

  • Demonstrate a commitment to a caring profession
  • Understands the importance of record keeping
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • IT skills
  • Car owner/driver or suitable alternative transport to enable you to undertake the job (it is unlikely that public transport will meet this requirement). Reasonable adjustments can be considered in accordance to the Equality Act
