Job overview

We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Locum Consultant Paediatric Neurologist to join our dynamic and expanding Paediatric Neurosciences team for a 12-month fixed-term maternity leave cover position.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced clinician to contribute to a comprehensive tertiary paediatric neurology service, delivering high-quality care to children and young people with a wide range of neurological conditions. The successful candidate will have a special interest in Neuromuscular Disorders and will play a key role in supporting and developing our multidisciplinary neuromuscular service.

The post holder will work alongside a team of consultant paediatric neurologists, specialist nurses, allied health professionals, and regional network partners to provide inpatient, outpatient, and outreach care. Opportunities exist to participate in service development, teaching, clinical governance, and research activities according to individual interests.

Main duties of the job

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide consultant-led paediatric neurology care within a tertiary neuroscience service.
  • Lead and contribute to specialist neuromuscular clinics and multidisciplinary team meetings.
  • Participate in the paediatric neurology on-call rota.
  • Support regional neuromuscular networks and outreach clinics.
  • Contribute to teaching and training of junior medical staff, nursing colleagues, and allied health professionals.
  • Participate in audit, quality improvement, and service development initiatives.

Essential Requirements

  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practise.
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register for Paediatric Neurology (or within six months of CCT at the time of interview).
  • Demonstrable experience in managing paediatric neuromuscular disorders.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and multidisciplinary team-working skills.

  • Ability to gain the trust and confidence of colleagues and patients.

Qualifications & Training

Essential

  • MRCPCH or equivalent.
  • Maintain Full registration with the GMC.
  • Must have CCT Paediatric Neurology and have been entered on the GMC Specialist Register at the time of the appointment.
  • Specialist registrars that do not hold a CCT must be due to be awarded one within 6 months of the interview date.

Desirable

  • Higher academic qualification e.g. MD, PhD or equivalent.

Clinical Governance and Audit

Essential

  • Evidence of recent CME/ reasonable training progression at this stage of career.
  • Experience in audit cycle.
  • Experience of audit projects.
  • Knowledge of contemporary NHS management issues.
  • Knowledge of political context within which we operate.

Desirable

  • Completion of a general management course or programme.
  • Demonstration of involvement in clinical directorate management.
  • Interest in medical management.

Interpersonal, communication and team working skills

Essential

  • Good written communication skills.
  • Evidence of the ability to communicate with patients, colleagues and staff at all levels.
