Job overview
We’re seeking enthusiastic colleagues to join our critical care directorate, which delivers care across 94 adult ICU beds at three hospitals. All units were rated “Good” by the CQC (2019) and received excellent peer review feedback in 2023.
Each unit admits both elective and emergency level 2 and 3 patients, but has distinct character:
- St Mary’s – Major Trauma & Quaternary Vascular Centre
- Charing Cross – Regional Stroke & Neurosurgical Centre
- Hammersmith – Cardiac, Renal & Haematology Centre
This diverse clinical mix supports innovation and collaborative, multidisciplinary care.
As one of the UK’s largest acute teaching Trusts, we offer extensive opportunities for career development. Academic clinicians are encouraged to lead multicentre research alongside our renowned department headed by Prof A. Gordon.
Applicants should be on the ICM Specialist Register or nearing CCT. We welcome dual-accredited candidates (e.g. anaesthesia, respiratory, emergency medicine). We encourage you to contact us to discuss how we can tailor the role to suit your interests and circumstances. Please note that the successful applicant will be required to work across both St Mary’s and Charing Cross critical care units.
Main duties of the job
The posts will attract 10PAs including a minimum of 2SPAs, but we also welcome applications from individuals who wish to work less than full time. Our philosophy is to formulate an individualised job plan with successful candidates, with an emphasis on enabling professional development and pursuit of specific interests. We strongly believe that the job plan needs to be sustainable and should enable the successful candidate to maintain a good work-life balance.
Main duties contained within the job plan are assessing and managing critically unwell patients as part of the ICU MDT team. This will involve twice daily ward rounds as a minimum with targeted assessment and interventions as required. Outreach duties are also contained within the job plans and there are outreach clinics which can be job planned for interested candidates. SPA duties will vary but all consultants are expected to support and supervise trainees.
All appointments are to the Trust, but we will discuss with you through the application process any preferences you have about working at a particular site or sites, and mutually agree this with you at appointment. There may also be opportunities for consultants to move sites during their career if they wish to, in order to gain new clinical or leadership experience.
