Job overview

The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital is seeking to recruit a Consultant Spinal Deformity Surgeon to maintain capacity and improve delivery of high-quality spinal surgery. At the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, the Consultant would join a surgical team of orthopaedic and neurosurgical spinal surgeons, working with colleagues to ensure and enhance effective patient centred care.

The department undertakes a comprehensive range of surgical procedures with particular expertise in reconstructive surgery for tumour, trauma, infection, and deformity.

The appointee will therefore have a particular interest in paediatric spinal deformity surgery. It is our intent to develop innovative and less invasive methods of deformity correction. Hence extensive experience of robotics, navigation, thorascopic surgery and an international spinal fellowship (ie three months or longer of working internationally as a fellow) is highly desirable.

There is no requirement to undertake intradural surgery.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The job plan is based upon approximately 10PA’s initially. It is anticipated that the successful candidate would undertake 1-2 all day (2.5PA) theatre lists per week (approximately 4-6 every 4 weeks), with 1-2 Out-patient clinics (1 PA each). There is a fixed MDT (0.75 PA) and consultant meeting (0.25 PA) on Monday morning which are in-person. 1 PA is paid for patient related administration (DCC). The Trust currently offers 1.5 PA for supporting professional activities (SPA) to demonstrate to the GMC that they are up to date and fit to practice via appraisal and revalidation. The trust is keen to offer a further 1 SPA in recognition of other supporting activities including teaching, undergraduate teaching, research, trainee supervision, managerial input, clinical governance work outside of audit of personal practice, improvement in patient care, service delivery enhancement and efficiency, or other activities as specified in the job planning policy.

Remuneration for travelling between ROH and BCH is specified in the job planning policy, currently rated at 0.125 PA each way. On call commitments attract 1 PA for unpredictable activity. The availability supplement is rated band A or B at 1:13 (prospective cover). Consultants within the Trust are expected to complete job plan diaries when required to ensure appropriate remuneration.
