The University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust is seeking to appoint a Locum Fixed Term Consultant in Plastic Surgery.

The post is for a Locum Consultant Plastic Surgeon with an interest in microsurgery, breast reconstruction and skin cancer.

This is a locum post initially for a 12-month fixed term contract in the Musculoskeletal & Specialist Surgery Clinical Management Group (MSS CMG) with most services being based at the Leicester Royal Infirmary.

The post holder will be 1 of 8 Plastic Surgeons offering General and sub-specialty Plastic Surgery and part of a 1 in 7 on-call rota.

The department of Plastic Surgery provides a consultant-led team approach to both adult and paediatric inpatient treatment across the broad spectrum of Plastic surgery disorders.

The ideal candidate will have experience and expertise in microsurgery, breast reconstruction, skin cancer management (including sentinel lymph node biopsy), and hand trauma. Fellowship training in one or more of these areas would be highly desirable.

Applicants must have full registration with the GMC and be in possession of the FRCS (PLAST) or equivalent. You should have experience at a Senior Registrar level or equivalent in Plastic Surgery.

Main duties of the job

The new appointee will work alongside the Consultant Plastic Surgeons and wider team to ensure a comprehensive and well co-ordinated Plastic Surgery service

The overriding purpose is to support the provision of highest quality patient care through personal actions and continuous improvement.

Responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of an illness and the proper functioning of the department

  • Cover for colleagues’ annual leave and other authorised absences where job plans allow
  • To participate in service development and business planning in collaboration with the other Consultants in the department, the management and CMG, along with local GP’s and commissioners within the CCG’s
  • Professional supervision and management of junior medical staff including the observation of local employment and human resource policies and procedures
  • Responsibility for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and contributing to undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing medical education activity, locally and nationally
  • The post holder is expected to respond in a timely manner to legitimate requests from Trust officers – this might include investigations into incidents or complaints
  • The post holder is expected to participate in professional continuing medical education; study leave is provided for this purpose

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • The post holder will be required to maintain their continuing professional development (CPD) to be able to successfully revalidate. As per the Trust requirement the successful candidate will be required to have an annual appraisal and attend / keep fully up to date with statutory & mandatory training as stipulated The post holder will be expected to undertake the Trust Corporate and Directorate specific induction and competency programmes appropriate to role

To be able to provide support when needed for the care of patients with emergency admissions or day attenders during office hours.

To be a point of escalation when the junior doctors require senior / Consultant advice

To provide Consultant Plastic Surgery services by way of outpatient clinics, outpatient procedure lists, theatre lists, both day case and inpatients, along with any peripheral activity, including UHL in Community sites and St Peters Health Centre

To work flexibly and cooperatively with the other consultant surgeons to maximise utilisation of outpatient and inpatients lists

The on-call commitment will be between 1:6 – 1:8 to include weekends and bank holidays
