Deputy Ward Leader, Children's Oncology/Haematology

Job overview

Ward 27 is looking to recruit an experienced nurse into the role of Deputy Sister/ Charge Nurse to help lead our dynamic team.

Ward 27 cares for children and young adults between the ages of 0 - 25 years with cancer and a variety of haematology conditions.  Ward 27 is composed of a 12 bedded inpatient ward with an attached Day Care Unit.

There are positions available on the inpatient ward and also in the attached Day Care Unit. Although the successful candidate will get a choice of where they will primarily be based for the foreseeable future, cross cover will be required at times across the inpatient ward and day care unit.  Ward 27 offers lots of diverse opportunities both clinically and professionally . We work closely with our partners in adult  services & provide care for Teenage Young Adult patients undergoing stem cell transplantation. We also work very closely with the Children's services at Nottingham.  This wide range of service provision exposes staff to a variety of ongoing professional development opportunities.

Main duties of the job

  • The successful candidate will be a clinical role model and will also have line management responsibilities. Therefore, the successful candidate will need to have a strong clinical knowledge and excellent clinical skills appropriate to this role, as well as excellent leadership skills.
  • The candidate's line management responsibilities will include sickness absence management, performing appraisals and a commitment to develop their team.  The successful person will also be expected to help maintain safety by investigating incidents and monitoring and maintaining staffing levels and rosters.
  • The successful candidate will need to be hard working and able to adapt their approach. They will also need to have excellent problem solving skills and demonstrate the ability to prioritise their work load and responsibilities.
  • The successful person will need to be experienced in Oncology/ Haematology and will need to be passionate about this area of nursing in order to help improve and sustain excellent service delivery.  The successful candidate should have paediatric oncology experience and will ideally hold an external paediatric oncology qualification.
  • The successful candidate will be passionate and committed to excellent patient care and delivering the highest standard of care possible.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of programmes of evidence-based nursing care to a group of patients.
  • Leadership and supervision of others carrying out all aspects of the caring process.
  • Deputise and take charge of the given area regularly in the absence of the Ward/Unit Manager who has 24 hour accountability and responsibility.
  • Actively contribute to setting and maintaining high standards of quality nursing care.
  • Participate in the effective clinical leadership and management of the ward team.
  • Actively contribute to the improvement of services and the quality of care provision to meet the needs of patients, service users and their families.
  • Act as a role model, mentoring, teaching, assessing and supporting students and learners on placement and participate in the education, development and mentorship of other staff.
