Job overview

Our Paediatric Department  is looking to appoint a Locum Consultant to work within the Multidisciplinary Child Development Team at the Royal Surrey Hospital particularly to support the assessment of children with social communication difficulties.

This post is for a fixed period 12 months, at 7.5 PA/week and there is no on-call requirement.  Due to the nature of the role working closely with schools, the department would consider flexible working options which would meet both the needs of the service and enable a positive work/life balance for the successful applicant.

Main duties of the job

The Locum Consultant will work in a well-established and supportive Multidisciplinary Child Development Team at the Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust to assess children with developmental delay including social communication difficulties. Competency in delivering paediatric epilepsy care is required, or working towards capability in this area. The desired candidate should have completed or be booked for PET courses. It is appreciated that applicants may need additional support and training to develop their role within the team.

Essential

  • Able to conduct a comprehensive assessment of children with Developmental concerns, including autism spectrum disorder (ASD), with understanding of relevant psycho-social factors and ability to undertake appropriate investigation
  • Able to assess children suspected to having been physically abused or neglected, write appropriate reports for case conferences and legal proceedings, participate in and contribute to case conferences.

Experience

Essential

  • Clinical experience in: Acute paediatrics and Paediatric Neurodisability
  • Broad general Paediatric experience
  • NHS experience
  • Knowledge of recognised tools for the assessment of developmental disorders including Autism Spectrum Disorder.
  • Understand the importance of multiagency working in the context of the management of children with complex neurodisability.
  • Knowledge of ‘Working Together to Safeguard Children 2018’ and of the relevant RCPCH guidance relating to Safeguarding.
  • Competent in delivering paediatric epilepsy care, or working towards competency in this area.

Desirable

  • Significant evidence of experience in clinical leadership
  • Training and experience in the use of standardised assessment tools in children with developmental disorders.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Full registration and a license to practice with the GMC
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • MRCPCH (theory) or Diploma of Child Health
  • MRCPCH (clinical) or equivalent
  • Provider status in APLS/EPLS and NLS or equivalent, or willingness to obtain within 6 months of interview date
  • Valid Level 3 Safeguarding Training

Desirable

  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register for Paediatrics (or relevant specialty) via: CCT (CCT date must be within 6 months of the interview date) or Portfolio Pathway
  • PET 2/3 Epilepsy Training, or booked for PET courses
  • Higher degree e.g. Postgraduate qualification in paediatric Neurodisability (Diploma/MSc).
  • Appraisal qualification
  • Qualification in leadership and/ or clinical management.
  • Teaching/Education Qualification
  • Educational Supervisor qualification
