Job overview

Croydon University Hospital NHS Trust wishes to appoint a full-time fixed-term (12 months) Locum Consultant in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery with a specialist interest in knee surgery, commencing 1 May 2026.

This post has been created to meet increased service demand in primary hip arthroplasty surgery following retirement of highly respected high-volume substantive arthroplasty surgeon. This is a fixed term locum consultant post for a period of 12 months.

The successful applicant will provide expertise in:

  • Primary total hip replacement
  • Non-arthroplasty hip preservation surgery
  • General trauma including complex lower limb trauma, periarticular fracture and periprosthetic fracture.

The post holder will integrate within the existing consultant body to deliver high-quality elective knee surgery and contribute to the general trauma service, including upper and lower limb trauma.

To support and further develop the management of patients accessing the service, the post holder will be expected to work with a team of trauma surgeon as part of 7 days trauma service. This requires knowledge, experience and expertise in undertaking general trauma and periprosthetic fracture.

Main duties of the job

This appointment is as an on-going strategy to develop excellence in standards of delivery of orthopaedic care in line with London emergency standards. They will be expected to provide a week of an emergency commitment 1 in 12.

The post holder will join a team of 14 Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeons and will participate in the 1 in 12 on call duties at CUH. The post holder also required to support senior grade staff grade and associate specialist to develop further.

The post holder will be responsible for the day to day management of general Orthopaedic patients admitted under his/her care and on call on a 1 in 12 rota based at the Croydon site.

The orthopaedic on call rota will run as Consultant of the Week (emergency committed only) from Friday 8am until Friday 8am the following week in line with the London Emergency Standards 1 in 12

There is 1 in 12 weekend commitment. The post holder will share the junior staff and will be responsible for training of CT1 and STs as well as Trust Grade Doctors. Consultants are required to be onsite and free of other commitments when on call during normal working hours. The successful applicant will provide a daily ward round when on call and will be free of clinical commitments as part of the 24 hours emergency surgery guidelines.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

It would be expected that the appointee will undertake a minimum of 8.5 programmed activities for direct clinical care and 1.5 for supporting duties. Normally these are expected to be carried out on site, though this may be negotiable in respect of the supporting activities. The job plan is annualised and run over an twelve-week timetable. The table following are some of the specific clinical duties expected of the employee. The department workload and planning often requires a degree of personal flexibility. The final timetable will be agreed between the successful applicant and the Clinical Lead and Service Manager following appointment. Any further changes to the job plan must be for the betterment of the service and have the full support of the specialty division together with the Medical Director's agreement.
