Job overview

Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is seeking an enthusiastic and experienced Locum Consultant Ophthalmologist with a specialist interest in Glaucoma to join our progressive and highly regarded Ophthalmology Directorate.  This is a fixed term post for 12 months (with potential to extend) and will be based predominantly at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital.

You will become part of a well‑established, forward‑thinking Glaucoma team, currently comprising three substantive consultants and a skilled multidisciplinary workforce including specialist nurses, optometrists and allied health professionals.

The service is recognised for its innovative use of virtual clinics, imaging‑led pathways and remote reporting, supporting high‑quality, efficient care for a large and diverse patient population.

This post offers an opportunity to join a friendly, committed department with a strong reputation for teamwork, innovation and patient‑centred care, in a city renowned for its quality of life and access to outstanding countryside.

Any candidate who is unable for personal reasons to work full-time will be eligible to be considered for the post; if such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust in consultation with consultant colleagues.

Main duties of the job

The appointee will, together with Consultant colleagues, be responsible for the provision of a comprehensive, effective and modern Ophthalmology service, practising the full remit of the specialty.

They will take their equal share in providing sub-specialty cover and will be required to cover for colleagues during periods of absence.  They will have continuing responsibility for patients in their care and the proper functioning of the Department.

They will be expected to take part in the support and training of junior Ophthalmologists and the development and training of medical students and ancillary allied professionals.

Appointments are made to the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and the person appointed is required to be sufficiently flexible to undertake their main clinical duties at any of the sites within the Trust and/or to change their base hospital.

The successful candidate will work according to the terms and conditions of the national consultant contract.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Please refer to the supporting job description and person specification which will outline the duties of the role including an indicative job plan. Applications from those unable, for personal reasons, to work on a whole time basis or a job share basis will be considered.

The successful candidate must be registered with the GMC with a valid licence to practice. For further information please visit the GMC website and click on the Registration and Licensing link.
