Job overview

Applications are invited for a Consultant Ophthalmologist with specialist interest in Medical Retina (10 PAs).

The appointed Consultant will join a team of 22 Consultant Ophthalmologists at an exciting time of new development and investment in the department of Ophthalmology at Addenbrooke’s Hospital.

This post is available as soon as possible for a period of 12 months.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will support the expansion of medical retina services and increase intravitreal injection capacity in existing and new treatment areas. They will collaborate with, supervise, and train new Band 6 and existing Band 7 allied health professionals and non-medical specialists in intravitreal injections and, when required, retinal clinics. The Medical Retina service is supported by four Consultants, three dedicated Medical Retina Band 7 Medical Retina allied health professionals and five Band 6 Medical Retina Nurses. There is a comprehensive imaging suite including Optos Silversone and Heidelberg Spectralis OCT, OCTA and autofluorescence.

The postholder would be welcomed to participate in the Consultant on-call rota for ophthalmic emergencies and can be supported for intraocular work that may present during emergencies. There are opportunities to fill gaps in the Consultant on-call rota (depending on experience) on a voluntary basis for additional payment.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The candidate will uphold the highest clinical standards in treating patients with eye conditions. They will share responsibility with colleagues for managing daily operations of the general and sub-specialist ophthalmology services, teach and mentor resident medical staff, medical students, optometrists (in both community and hospital settings), GPs, and other relevant personnel. The candidate will take an active role in departmental and Trust initiatives related to Clinical Governance and auditing and ensure ongoing engagement in continuing professional development (CPD) activities.
