The Department of Neurosurgery at Great Ormond Street Hospital is advertising for a Locum Paediatric Consultant Neurosurgeon.

The Locum Consultant will be working within Neurosurgery as a member of a multidisciplinary team that includes colleagues from different professional groups, including trainees in neurosurgery, fellows in paediatric neurosurgery, Advanced Nurse Practitioners and Trainee Nurse Practitioners. The Locum Consultant will work closely with colleagues in the Brain Directorate and other specialities at Great Ormond Street Hospital to deliver care for their patients and support related services within Great Ormond Street Hospital.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will share in the responsibility for providing emergency and elective neurosurgical care. He or she will also be involved in delivering the Paediatric spine, Cranio-cervical junction. The expectation is that the post holder will undertake to be on call for emergency neurosurgical care on a 1 in 7 basis. Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Daily ward rounds, weekly outpatient clinic and elective and emergency operating sessions

To undertake responsibility for the teaching and training of the junior paediatric neurosurgical staff.

Each consultant has a continuing responsibility for the care of patients in their charge and for the proper functioning of the service allowing for appropriate delegation for the training of their staff.

  • Published research in peer reviewed journals in relevant area

Academic/Professional qualification/Training

Essential

  • Full GMC registration (specialist register for neurosurgery) with Licence to Practice
  • Fellow of The Royal College of Surgeons or equivalent
  • Completion of recognised one-year fellowship in paediatric neurosurgery with experience in complex congenital spinal cord malformations and fetal surgery

Desirable

  • Higher degree – MSc, MPhil related discipline
