Applications are invited for the post of Consultant Neurosurgeon with a subspecialty interest in Epilepsy and Functional Neurosurgery based at University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff.

The successful candidate will join a dynamic Functional and Epilepsy Surgery neurosurgical team consisting of two Consultant Neurosurgeons, four Neurologists, two neuroradiologists, one clinical neuropsychologist, one neuropsychiatrist, one clinical neurophysiologist and three Clinical Nurse Specialists. With Prof Gray, you will deliver part of the epilepsy surgery programme. As part of  the Advanced Neurotherapies Centre Clinical Trials Team you will be part of the clinical and operative surgical team delivering Gene and Cell therapies to the human brain using state-of-the-art intraoperative MR stereotactic techniques.

The South Wales Epilepsy Surgery service covers a population of 2.5 million, includes dedicated epilepsy, first seizure and epilepsy surgery clinics and a fortnightly Epilepsy Surgery MDT, supported by neurosurgery, epileptology, neuroradiology, neuropsychology, neurophysiology, neuropsychiatry and nuclear medicine. There are three epilepsy clinical nurse specialists.  We have a dedicated Videotelemetry suite for scalp and intracranial recording and a Renishaw Neuromate Robotic system for SEEG implantation. We also have a Clearpoint Neuro intra-operative MRI stereotactic system for gene therapy delivery in one of our 3T MR scanners.

Main duties of the job

The Academic Unit of Neurosciences within Cardiff University’s Division of Psychological Medicine and Clinical Neurosciences includes four Professors and two Senior Lecturers. A broad portfolio of research is undertaken including stem cell and neural transplantation and gene therapy delivery for neurodegenerative diseases (Huntington’s and Parkinson’s Diseases) and epilepsy, as well as translational research using living human brain tissue, neurogenetics, and neuroepidemiology. Cardiff University’s Advanced Neurotherapies Centre hosts a dedicated Clinical Research Facility in the department, as well as a human tissue lab and the Wales Neurosciences Tissue Research Biobank. Close academic links are enjoyed with the University Schools of Biosciences and Psychological Medicine and advanced MR imaging  (CUBRIC). Cardiff and Vale UHB has a major R&D role and supports opportunities to develop clinical research studies including therapeutic trials. The Neurosurgery Department is currently the only UK centre delivering gene therapies to patients in first-in-human trials. The UHB is recognised as a teaching centre of excellence in a wide range of clinical services.
