Job overview

University College London Hospitals is seeking to appoint a part-time Consultant in Neurology with an interest in epilepsy with a commitment to high quality patient care, innovative service models, delivery of performance targets, and excellence in education/training.

Applications are invited for a 1-year locum consultant appointment in Neurology. The post is offered on a 6.75-session basis and provides an opportunity to join a dynamic, expanding department and to contribute to the multidisciplinary care of patients with epilepsy.

The purpose of this role is to deliver specialist epilepsy care with a particular focus on pathways and safe prescribing of antiseizure medications. This position has arisen as a result of re-organisation of clinical duties within the epilepsy team, new national guidance for valproate usage and through our elective recovery programme in our commitment to improve and reduce our patient waiting times across the directorate.

The post holder will be based at the Chalfont Centre for Epilepsy and The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (NHNN)

CV required for application.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will be expected to provide expertise in epilepsy including diagnosis, assessment, use of anti-epileptic medication, and pre-surgical assessment. The post-holder will be part of a multidisciplinary team (including epilepsy specialist nurses, neurosurgeons, neuropsychologists and neuropsychiatrists) assessing and managing patients with epilepsy. The post-holder will be expected to develop close links with all members of the team and to develop protocols for seamless patient care. The post-holder will deliver 3.5 clinics per week comprising a specialist epilepsy clinic twice a week and fortnightly, as well as a weekly specialist clinic dedicated to patients on valproate treatment. There is additional time for patient administration and attending specialist MDT meeting.

The appointee will be expected to participate in all activities of the Department including postgraduate teaching, clinical audit and research. They will be required to undertake clinical management duties and work effectively in a multidisciplinary team and to demonstrate clinical leadership.
