Job overview

The Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to appoint two substantive Consultant Virologists to join our dynamic and expanding Infection Directorate within the Division of Infection, Immunity, Rare Diseases and Outpatients.

These are exciting opportunities to join one of the United Kingdom’s leading centres for infection services, providing specialist virology expertise across our four main hospital sites: the Royal Free, Barnet, Chase Farm and North Middlesex University Hospitals.

Our Virology Department plays a vital role in supporting a wide range of clinical services including solid organ transplantation, HIV medicine, viral hepatitis, renal dialysis, antenatal and foetal maternal infection, infection prevention and control, and high consequence infectious diseases.

You will join a well established, research active consultant team working at the forefront of clinical virology, education and translational research. The Royal Free has strong academic links with University College London and UCL Partners, offering opportunities for professional growth, teaching and innovation.

Applicants seeking less than full time or flexible working are warmly encouraged to apply.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide consultant level clinical and diagnostic virology expertise to ensure safe, effective and evidence based patient care across the Trust. • Deliver specialist input to high risk clinical areas including transplant, HIV, viral hepatitis, antenatal and foetal maternal infection, renal dialysis and infection prevention and control. • Provide expert virology advice and liaison to Barnet, Chase Farm and North Middlesex University Hospital microbiology teams. • Participate in departmental multidisciplinary team meetings, ward rounds, handovers and the daytime clinical duty rota. There is currently no out of hours on call commitment. • Lead and contribute to the development of Trust wide infection policies, laboratory harmonisation and clinical governance activities. • Support emerging infection preparedness and provide input into high consequence infectious disease response as part of the Infection Directorate. • Supervise and train infection specialty trainees, clinical scientists and foundation doctors, acting as an Educational and or Clinical Supervisor. • Engage in clinical audit, quality improvement and research with opportunities to collaborate on translational and academic projects. • Maintain continuing professional development in line with GMC and Royal College standards.

The indicative job plan is 10 PAs comprising 8.5 Direct Clinical Care and 1.5 Supporting Professional Activities, with flexibility for less than full time applicants.
