Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust is inviting applications for a Locum Consultant in Genitourinary Medicine to cover a period of maternity leave. This post is offered at 6 programmed activities (PAs).
The successful candidate will join an established and supportive clinical team comprising Consultant in Genitourinary Medicine and HIV and a Specialty Doctor. Together, the team delivers high-quality care across HIV management, sexually transmitted infections, and a comprehensive range of contraceptive services.
This role offers an excellent opportunity to contribute to the ongoing development of an integrated sexual health service, enhance patient care pathways, and further improve outcomes for individuals. The service provides both inpatient and outpatient care, supported by a dedicated multidisciplinary team, including a specialist pharmacist and clinical psychologist.

Main duties of the job
The post holder will participate in a 1 in 3 on call Consultant rota during weekdays and weekends along with a Consultant in HIV and sexual health at Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust (Sandwell General Hospital). The integrated sexual health service is also supported by a Consultant in sexual and reproductive health who manages cases of complex contraception which includes deep implants and misplaced intrauterine contraceptive devices.
Provide a high-quality HIV and integrated contraception and sexual health service to outpatients attending WISH Walsall Sexual Health Service which is delivered by the Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust. Clinics will be a combination of complex and non-complex sexual health, contraception advice and opportunity to have procedure clinics fitting LARCs depending on competency level.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- Provide at least 1 HIV outpatient per week seeing both follow up and new patients.
- Provide support to all wards looking after HIV positive inpatients.
- Take an active role in the management of the service with opportunities to develop interests and leadership skills.
- Support and provide teaching to undergraduates, junior medical staff, nurses and primary care colleagues as required within the clinical setting.
- To provide specialist advice to colleagues within the Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust in other specialities as required providing optimum delivery of patient care.
- Demonstrate involvement with clinical governance, risk management and audit processes.
- Participate in continued professional development, multidisciplinary and clinical meetings, and other postgraduate activity to provide up to date clinical care.
- Participate in mandatory training, annual appraisals and annual job planning process and revalidation.
- Contribute to the directorate team system of cover for annual, study and professional leave and deputise for absent colleagues as far as is practicable.
- Maintain professional standards as set out by the General medical council.

- Fully registered with GMC
- Must be on the GMC’s Specialist Register for Genito-Urinary Medicine [or a Specialist Registrar not yet enrolled must provide documentary evidence that they will have completed relevant CCT within six months].
- Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP)
- Diploma in G-U Medicine
- Diploma in HIV Medicine
- Diploma of the Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Health (DFSRH)
- Letter of Competence in Sub dermal implants(LOC SDI)
- Letter of Competence in Intrauterine Techniques (LOC IUT) Additional Postgraduate qualifications, e.g., MD, MSc, MFPHM, PGA Med Ed .

- Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in Genito-urinary medicine including HIV management
- Able to take responsibility for delivering level 3 sexual health service without direct supervision
- Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on full range of sexual health and HIV issues in male and female patients and take full and independent responsibility for the clinical care of patients where appropriate.
- Ability to problem solve and identify a solution(s) using combination literature, personal experience and information gained from peers
- Ability to lead a multi-disciplinary team during an integrated level 3 Sexual Health clinical session
