This is an exciting opportunity to join a highly respected Renal team providing comprehensive Renal services across East, West and North Kent as we continue to expand and innovate.

Our team supports leadership and transformation programmes across the organisation and has a diverse and vibrant research programmes encompassing basic sciences (collaboration with Medway School of Pharmacy), epidemiologic (collaboration with University of Kent) and clinical research across the spectrum of renal diseases. We recruit to NIHR Portfolio studies supported by a team of research nurses.  We work closely with other specialties and offer opportunities to combine specialties.

This role provides other exciting opportunities including leading new service developments such as renal hot clinics, quality improvement projects, research and PAs in education are also available supporting Kings College Hospital and the Kent and Medway Medical Schools. Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be expected to provide the following core specialist roles:

  • Provide a Consultant-delivered service for in-patient Renal medicine on Marlowe ward at Kent and Canterbury Hospital (1 month every 5 months)
  • Participate in a 1 in 10 renal on-call rota
  • Provide outpatient care as appropriate for the following specialist areas: -        Monthly Peritoneal Dialysis Clinics at Margate and K&C and provide support for the Home therapies nursing team -          Fortnightly Advanced Kidney care clinics at K&C -          Fortnightly general nephrology clinics based at K&C -          Weekly renal hot clinic and general nephrology clinics based at Margate -          Monthly renal transplant clinics based at Margate
  • Haemodialysis cover at Margate for a morning, afternoon and twilight (soon to be opened) haemodialysis shift for an 11-station satellite dialysis unit
  • Provide in-reach support for referrals at Margate and K&C
  • Contribute to teaching and supervision of Renal resident trainees including training and supervision of native and transplant kidney biopsies, insertion and removal of permanent and temporary dialysis catheters
  • Provide referral support to other clinical specialists from the community and from trusts across Kent
  • Participate in clinical audit, quality improvement work, mortality reviews and other departmental clinical governance activities to support appraisal and revalidation.

In taking up this role you will join a strong Renal Consultant team providing specialist services to the region. Duties will include: supporting Renal Inpatient Services; Renal On calls; new Renal Rapid Assessment ‘Hot Clinics’ to provide admission avoidance and early discharge to support acute front door services; outpatient management of Nephrology, Haemodialysis and Peritoneal Dialysis patients; teaching both within the department and the wider organisation.

There will also be additional duties available depending on your area of interest, including wider undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, supervising procedures, developing a new service such as for LA PD and supporting our Home Therapies transformation.

Clinical Governance

Essential

  • Experience of morbidity and mortality review
  • Evidence of audit of own practice

Desirable

  • Structured judgement review training

Teaching Experience

Essential

  • Experience of delivering post graduate teaching

Desirable

  • Medical education qualification or equivalent
  • Train the Trainers

Qualification and Traning

Essential

  • Full Registration with the General Medical Council
  • Member of the Royal College of Physicians or equivalent
  • Entry on the GMC specialist register for Renal Medicine via CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview), OR relevant CESR
  • SCE in Renal
  • Minimum of English Level 2 (GCSE grade C or equivalent), ILETS, or graduate of a UK Medical School

Desirable

  • Good Clinical Practice training

Clinical Skills and Training

Essential

  • Wide knowledge, competence and experience in all areas of inpatient and outpatient renal medicine

Desirable

  • Higher degree (MD/PhD or equivalent)
  • Previous NHS experience
