Job overview

This is a full time locum consultant appointment to cover unexpected absence in the department. The successful applicant would be part of a team of 6 Paediatric and Neonatal Surgeons for a duration for 6 months with a possibility to extend.

This postholder will be expected to be proficient in Gastro intestinal surgery and neonatal surgery and is expected to cover the range of paediatric surgical cases during emergency rota, including urology and trauma. We are looking for someone with experience in Neonatal and General Paediatric Surgery and who would be able to undertake the clinical activities without any additional support. We expect the candidate to be appropriately certified for the competence by national body and be on specialist register with GMC.  A flexibility in undertaking routine activity is a must due to current resource availability and needs of the department.

Main duties of the job

The appointment is to the Trust, not to specific hospitals.

All consultants, including the appointee, will be expected to be involved in implementing the Trust’s Clinical Governance programme.  This includes active participation in clinical audit, quality, clinical guidelines/pathways, professional development, appraisal and risk management.

The appointee will be a member of the Consultant Staff Committee and be expected to serve on this committee.

  • Full Competence in emergency pediatric and neonatal Surgery. experience in Paediatric and Neonatal Surgery including complex neonatal procedures.
  • Demonstrate appropriate progression and continuity in career in a timely manner.
  • Training in Basic and Advanced Laparoscopic GI Surgery.
  • Publications and presentations in international conferences.
  • Ability to demonstrate high quality neonatal and paediatric surgery care through participation in governance processes. No active governance issues and full disclosure of any past issues.

Desirable

  • Previous experience at consultant level or independent practice.
  • Wider experience in Paediatric GI
  • Good understanding of Governance aspects and understanding of complexity in delivery of high-quality care in paediatric surgery.
  • Published papers in area of special interest

Circumstances

  • Able to start as soon as possible
  • Flexible outlook on working hours.
  • Must live within a 15-mile radius of the base Trust or 30 minutes travelling time.
  • Full Driving Licence.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Full GMC Registration with good standing on specialist register
  • Higher qualification in Paediatric Surgery e.g. FRCS(Paed) or equivalent

Desirable

  • Additional Fellowships in GI or neonatal surgery
  • Thoracic Surgery experience

Communications and Language Skills

Essential

  • Ability to communicate effectively with clinical colleagues, colleagues in pathology and support staff
  • Ability to present effectively to an audience, using a variety of methods, and to respond to questions and queries
  • Good knowledge of, and ability to use, spoken and written English.

Desirable

  • Good presentation skills
