Job overview

Any person who is unable for personal reasons to work full-time will be eligible to be considered for the post. If such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis, in consultation with consultant colleagues. Suitably qualified job-share candidates will receive serious consideration.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will provide a general ENT elective and emergency care, with an on-call commitment of 1 in 14. They will provide a general ENT service at secondary care level and will participate in an emergency service cover at consultant level.
Teaching/Research
Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is a teaching hospital trust, and the post-holder will be required to participate in programmes for teaching clinical students, training junior doctors and in clinical examinations. It is expected that this will be an integral part of everyday clinical activity. The Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust post-holder’s contribution to teaching, training and research will be included in the regular job plan review.
Clinical Governance
The post-holder will participate in all clinical governance activities, including clinical audit, clinical effectiveness, risk management, quality improvement activities as required by the Trust, and external accrediting bodies.
Personal and Professional Development
The post-holder will be required to keep himself/herself fully up-to-date with their relevant area of practice and to be able to demonstrate this to the satisfaction of the Trust. Professional or study leave will be granted at the discretion of the Trust, in line with the prevailing Terms and Conditions of Service, to support appropriate study, postgraduate training activities, relevant CME courses and other appropriate personal development needs
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
We are looking for a talented and motivated individual to join the ENT department at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford. The post offers the opportunity to work as a general ENT consultant in a busy teaching hospital. The locum post is anticipated to become substantive. The post holder may have the opportunity to develop a specialist interest in line with the needs of the service.
Applicants should have a passion for working across all areas of general ENT and enthusiasm for the breadth of varied clinical practice.
This recruitment is intended to expand consultant capacity to utilise the additional operating provision created by regular all-day general anaesthetic lists within the new Surgical Elective Centre (SEC) at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, due to open in summer 2026.
The SEC is a purpose-built, five-storey facility designed to support the reduction of NHS waiting lists. It will house seven state-of-the-art operating theatres, including two hybrid theatres, with the aim of increasing capacity for planned surgical activity. The centre will deliver tertiary complex and routine procedures for patients across Oxfordshire, Berkshire, and Buckinghamshire.
The John Radcliffe Hospital ENT Department is a friendly and collaborative place to work. You will be working closely with a dedicated and caring multi-disciplinary team who strive to provide gold standard care with compassion; we urge you to visit the unit prior to interview.
The appointee will be expected to participate in the on-call rota and may be required to work on any other site as required by the OUH Trust in the future.
