Applications are invited for the above post of Consultant Ophthalmologist, with a special interest in cornea and ocular surface disease. The successful applicant will support the development of the keratoconus service and support the ocular surface, acute eye services and as well has having the opportunity to provide consultant level cataract and ocular surface surgery, depending on the experience of the applicant. An interest in ocular surface oncology would be advantageous. The post is offered for 12 months in the first instance, pending formal substantive appointment.
There is no on-call commitment with this fixed-term post. When the substantive post is advertised the job plan will include involvement in the SWL ophthalmology regional on-call rota, based at St George’s Hospital.
The post is based at Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust, which is a large Trust serving South West London and Surrey and part of the St George's, Epsom and St Helier Hospital Group (GESH) .
The Corneal and Ocular surface service provides clinics at St Helier hospital, and Epsom General hospital. The Acute Eye service is based at the St Helier site. Epsom and St Helier Trust is part of the South West London Ophthalmology Network, with its out of hours and on-call service based at Moorfields at St George’s Hospital in Tooting.
The successful candidate will join a team of 14 Consultants with dedicated subspecialty interests. There is one theatre list per week with this post.
Main duties of the job
This post is for a part time Fixed term Consultant Ophthalmologist with special interest in cornea and ocular surface disease. The post holder will work alongside the wider cornea and acute eye service team. There is one theatre list per week with this post.
The post holder will be required to work across both sites and the role may change depending on service needs. There is no on call commitment within this 6.5 PA job plan, but there be an opportunity to increase PAs in the future to include on call commitments.

Essential
- Ability to establish good working relationships with staff and be able to communicate well with patients.
- Demonstrable skills in written and spoken English to the appropriate standard necessary to fulfil the job requirements
Clinical experience
Essential
- Experienced in running busy corneal and ocular surface clinics
- Experience of working in a busy Acute Eye Casualty Service
- Clinical training and experience and ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients.
Desirable
- Evidence of peer reviewed publications in the sphere of cornea
Teaching and Research
Essential
- Experience of teaching undergraduate and postgraduate trainees
- Experience of supervising junior doctors
- Ability to teach clinical skills
- Ability to apply research findings to clinical problems
Desirable
- Ability to supervise postgraduate research
Qualifications and Training
Essential
- Must be on the Specialist Registrar, hold a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT/CCST) or be within 6 months of obtaining the CCT
- Appropriate higher medical qualification i.e. FRCOphth or CCST equivalent
Desirable
- Post CCST Fellowship
Management and Administration
Essential
- Has attended recognised management training or will have such training on completion of CCT/CCST
- Ability to contribute to change management
- Experience of and participation in departmental audit.

- Understanding of issues relating to service organisation and development
