Job overview

Interviews will be held on 2/6/26

Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust is seeking to appoint a 12 month Locum Consultant in Emergency Medicine to join the Urgent & Emergency Care Directorate, working at Charing Cross Hospital.

This post offers the opportunity to practise Emergency Medicine at scale within one of the UK’s leading Academic Health Science Centres, delivering high-quality care to diverse patient populations in a Type 1 Emergency Department.

The role is predominantly clinical, providing senior clinical leadership and decision-making within busy emergency departments, while also offering protected non-clinical time to support professional development.

Consultants are encouraged to develop interests aligned to service needs and personal career goals, including education, quality improvement, leadership, research, frailty, mental health, major trauma or same-day emergency care.

We welcome applications from both newly appointed and experienced consultants, and we are committed to flexible and supportive job planning. Posts may be based at a single site or include cross-site working by agreement, supported through annual team job planning. At Imperial, we value kindness, collaboration, expertise and aspiration, and we are seeking colleagues who share these values and are motivated to contribute positively to patient care, team culture and service improvement.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will provide consultant-level emergency care and leadership within the Emergency Department, working collaboratively with multidisciplinary colleagues to ensure safe, timely and compassionate care for patients.

Clinical responsibilities include:

  • Delivering senior decision-making across the full range of emergency presentations
  • Providing visible clinical leadership in resuscitation, majors, rapid assessment and SDEC areas
  • Supporting patient flow, clinical prioritisation and risk management

In keeping with our collaborative and aspirational values, consultants are expected to play an active role in:

  • Teaching, supervising and supporting junior doctors and other members of the multidisciplinary team
  • Contributing to clinical governance, audit, quality improvement and patient safety activity
  • Supporting service development, innovation and transformation within Emergency Medicine

Job plans include flexibility to support educational roles, leadership development, research or service improvement work, aligned to both individual strengths and departmental priorities. Consultants are encouraged to role-model professionalism, kindness and inclusive leadership, contributing to a positive learning environment and a culture of continuous improvement.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The Consultant in Emergency Medicine will work as a senior clinical leader within the Emergency Department, contributing to high-quality patient care, team development and service improvement.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing safe, effective and patient-centred emergency care
  • Maintaining professional standards and GMC specialist registration
  • Supporting and supervising junior doctors, fostering a positive learning culture
  • Participating in audit, governance, quality improvement and incident review
  • Working collaboratively with nursing, managerial and specialty colleagues
  • Contributing to service planning, transformation and strategic objectives

The post holder is expected to demonstrate the Trust’s values in everyday practice: being kind in interactions with patients and colleagues, collaborative in multidisciplinary working, expert in clinical practice and decision-making, and aspirational in driving improvement and innovation.

Through strong leadership, professionalism and teamwork, the successful candidate will help shape the future of Emergency Medicine at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust while delivering outstanding care to patients
