Raigmore Hospital, Inverness

Locum Consultant General and Colorectal Surgeon

12 Months Fixed Term

10 PAs

Applications are invited for a full-time Consultant General & Colorectal Surgeon based at Raigmore Hospital, Inverness. The appointee will join a dynamic and motivated team to augment the provision of specialist colorectal services to a population of approximately 350’000.

The Colorectal Unit at Raigmore is a friendly and inclusive team and currently consists of 7 Colorectal Surgeons, 1 Physician Associate, 1 Cancer Single-Point-Of-Contact healthcare professional and 4 Clinical Nurse Specialists. The team provides a full range of colorectal services for patients across NHS Highland and NHS Western Isles, including Robotic-assisted surgery (RAS), Colon & Rectal Cancer resection, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Pelvic Health, Proctology and Advanced Endoscopy. To complement the existing skillset within the department, the team are looking for a highly motivated individual to expand and develop the RAS colorectal service. Accredited fellowship training in robotic surgery is therefore highly desirable. Since acquiring a robotic platform in 2021, the majority of rectal and left colonic resections are now performed with robotic surgery; a policy which has seen a demonstrable reduction in length of stay and use of critical care beds. The team are keen to build on this success by focusing on complex cancer & IBD resections, robotic TAMIS and progressing towards day case colectomy. Dependent on experience, it is anticipated that the post-holder would be offered regular access to full day robotic theatre lists (Dual Console DaVinci Xi) with local mentorship available if required.

The successful candidate will also join with colleagues in General, Oesophago-gastric and Hepatobiliary surgery to participate in the Emergency General Surgery (EGS) on-call rota on a 1:12 basis. A broad experience in emergency general and gastrointestinal surgery, including JAG certification for lower GI endoscopy, is therefore essential.

The Department of Surgery in Raigmore has a strong foundation in Surgical Research and Innovation and maintains close links with a range of academic institutions but particularly with the University of Aberdeen). The unit has supervised over 24 postgraduate degrees and is home to The Scottish Surgical Boot Camp. Current projects include UK-wide surgical trials, RAS-research, surgical education research, novel pathways and early cancer detection diagnostics. While the current post is being offered on a full-time basis of 10 clinical PA’s, it is anticipated that candidates with a record of established research (publications and grants) will be able to convert a proportion (e.g. 2PA’s) of these to funded academic sessions and become a Senior Lecturer at The University of Aberdeen.
