Job overview

We seek an enthusiastic and self motivated person to join our forward thinking team. The post holder is expected to provide predominantly Otology services and to lead on the development of the Otology service.

We are looking for a team player with an enthusiasm for teaching and training to join the team of Consultants in the Ear Nose and Throat Department of East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust.

The post is to start immediately for the successful candidate. The postholder will be part of the on-call consultant rota, which is 1:5 non resident and supported by both middle grade and junior on call tiers who undertake the 1st and 2nd on call management of emergency ENT patients.

The surgeon will help to further expand our elective surgical services at Burnley General Hospital whilst also contributing to managing complex patients at Royal Blackburn Hospital.

We are a highly motivated and cohesive team dedicated to providing an excellent service for our patients. The programme of support for each individual doctor will be flexible depending on his/her particular needs and experience. The successful candidate will be appointed on the new consultant contract which will consist of 10. Programmed Activities (PA’s). This will consist of 8.5 PA’s for Direct Clinical Care and 1.5 PA’s for supporting professional activities.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will join a team of 6 consultants, mainly based at the Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital but with some sessions at the outpatient department at St Peter’s Health Centre in Burnley and elective theatre suite at Burnley General Teaching Hospital. On call duties will be at Royal Blackburn Hospital.

We have a strong emphasis on training and have a strong commitment to support, mentorship and development of all of our staff and have regular multidisciplinary meetings.

The candidate will work in a multi-disciplinary team approach alongside medical staff, nurse practitioners, and allied health professionals. Clinical research, quality improvement and service development are actively encouraged.

The post holder will hold regular independent outpatient clinics and will be responsible for formalising patient care pathways and responsibility for pre, post and perioperative care of patients undergoing surgery as well as provision of care for the in-patients.

This involves care of adult and paediatric patients.

The department is supported by the following : 1 Associate Specialist, 2 Specialty Drs, 1 ST3+ trainees and 2 MCH Trainee, 1 CT, 1 JCF, 1 FY2 trainee, 1 GPST and 1 FY1 trainee. With further support from 1 ACP and 1 Specialist Nurse.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Applicants will hold Full registration with GMC and a licence to practise

Applicants will either be on the specialist register or be within six months of their expected date of CCT at the time of interview.

Specialist Registrar or equivalent grade experience in ENT surgery leading to CCT or equivalent is required.

Applicants must possess the following skills, Able to fully integrate within the ENT unit and develop own specialist interest that complements the existing skills/interests of the directorate. Able to communicate with and motivate colleagues both medical and non-medical, evidence of good team worker and the ability to lead a team.

You will be required to participate in Consultant Appraisal and Job Plan Reviews on an annual basis and the revalidation process in line with your professional registration

  • Commitment to develop teaching for nursing and other support specialties

  • Sub-specialist up to date knowledge in adult and paediatric Otology
  • Wide experience of general otolaryngology
  • Experience in the multidisciplinary management of adults and children in ENT and Audiology
  • Competency in independent management of acute ENT emergencies and trauma
