Job overview
We are seeking a Locum Consultant in Dermatology to join our friendly and supportive team on a 12-month contract. The department includes 11 consultants, a consultant/associate specialist, two specialist registrars on the Yorkshire rotation, hospital practitioners, a Physician Associate, GP trainees, Advanced Nurse Practitioners in skin cancer and specialist nursing teams.
The service has dedicated dermatology theatres and facilities for PDT, phototherapy and patch testing. Nurse-led services include dermatological surgery, leg ulcer and lymphoedema management, cryotherapy, drug monitoring, and skin cancer diagnosis and follow-up. We work closely with other specialties, including Maxillofacial Surgery, Plastic Surgery and Rheumatology.
The post is primarily based at York Hospital, with services also delivered at peripheral sites. An active teledermatology service supports advice and guidance and referral triage. Inpatient services are provided at York and Scarborough Hospitals through a weekday daytime on-call rota, supported by electronic referrals and remote review where appropriate.
The role includes general and specialist outpatient clinics, surgical lists and participation in the consultant on-call rota. Outpatient clinics will be held at York Hospital and one peripheral East Coast hospital.
Main duties of the job
This role provides general/specialist outpatient clinics and surgical lists plus contributing to the consultant on call rota. Outpatient clinics are at York Hospital and one peripheral East Coast hospital. You will join a well-established and collaborative department, focused on excellent, person-centred care. Within the Trust we are part of Clinical Support and Cancer Services Care Group, which includes most specialist medicine services. We have a Clinical Director responsible for all services. Individual job plans will be discussed with the post holder on appointment, with the Clinical Director to finalise the job plan which will become operational on commencement. All jobs’ plans are agreed in line with the Trusts Job Planning Principles.
As a department we are committed to supporting flexible job plans and will work with you to mutually agree your activity commitment. We have opportunities to explore teaching, research and quality improvement projects to enhance our service.
We strive to support your leadership and development in role and would be keen to discuss development pathways and subspecialty interests; ensuring activity is allocated within your job plan to achieve this.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities

A full-time post is likely to consist of 5-6 outpatient clinics a week (which may be a mix of general clinics, surgical lists, telephone / teledermatology clinics and special interest clinics and can be adapted as appropriate on discussion). Travel time to peripheral hospitals will be supported within the job plan. In addition, there is a once a month joint difficult cases clinic and weekly skin cancer multidisciplinary meetings.
You will also contribute to the daytime Dermatology on call rota that supports both York and Scarborough inpatients.
The successful applicant will have secretarial support and office accommodation.
