Job summary

We are looking to appoint an enthusiastic Specialty Doctor to work as part of our Orthopaedic team.

The post is 10 PAs per week which includes admin and SPA sessions. In addition, there is currently a 1:9 non-resident on call commitment which attracts a total payment of 12.5 PA.

This post is for service provision however excellent training opportunities are available. The successful candidates will also be expected to be actively involved in daily ward rounds, MDTs and the supervision and training of students and junior doctors.

Main duties of the job

(a) Clinical Services

The appointed clinician will, together with colleagues, be responsible for the delivery and improvement of clinical care in Orthopaedic & Trauma Surgery, under supervision of, and guided by, the Departmental Consultant staff.

The base hospital for this post is Barnsley Hospital, but in the setting of a co-operative arrangement between Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and community, clinical duties may involve delivery of care at other venues according to Service Level.

In the absence of Consultant input, advising medical, nursing, managerial and other colleagues on matters appropriate to the postholders knowledge and experience.

Liaison with colleagues, accepting equal responsibility for ensuring that an appropriate level of cover is maintained within the department during periods of absence on annual, study and other leave.

In exceptional circumstances and irregular occasions, providing clinical cover outside the normal working times where clinical necessity dictates.

(b) Training and Education

The Specialty Doctor will be expected:

To contribute to the teaching of other grades of staff, both within and outside the department, Including medical staff, nurses, paramedical staff and scientific and technical staff.

To contribute to postgraduate and continuing medical education activity, at Departmental level.

Person specification

Experience

Essential

  • 4 yrs full-time Postgraduate clinical experience in hospital
  • Significant exposure to most areas of O & T practice at CT or higher level
  • Broad experience of Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgery in general
  • Good clinical surgical diagnostic skills
  • Good clinical manual dexterity
  • Knowledge of medical problems relating to O & T
  • Ability to deal with urgent situations

Desirable

  • Experience of Moderate or Major inpatient surgery
  • Attended course in management of medical emergencies ALS/ ATLS
  • Interest / experience in different orthopaedic techniques

Qualifications

Essential

  • Fully registered with the GMC

Desirable

  • If not already passed MRCS then there is an expectation that successful applicant will work towards achieving this goal as quickly as possible

Teaching & Research

Essential

  • Understanding of the requirement to educate junior staff
  • Willingness to learn new techniques
  • Evidence of a record of CPD / CME
  • Ability to teach clinical skills
  • Ability to demonstrate patience as a teacher

Desirable

  • Experience of teaching clinical skills to undergraduates and postgraduates
  • Confident in teaching a wide range of surgical procedures
  • Keenness to initiate audit or research projects

Management & Administration

Essential

  • Able to understand, organise and manage priorities and waiting lists
  • Efficient time management skills
  • Able to use initiative

Desirable

  • Experience of completion and presentation of audit project
