This is an exceptional career opportunity for an experienced, high calibre pharmacist looking to further advance their career and develop leadership, clinical and prescribing skills within Anticoagulation and Haemostasis at St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The post holder will need to be flexible and organised, be able to align their values with those of the organisation, work well within a team and have a ‘can do’ positive attitude.

We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic senior pharmacist to make a difference and ensure the best outcomes for our patients. The post holder will work to ensure the continued provision and development of high quality, comprehensive clinical pharmacy services to patients as well as influence senior managers and clinicians. The role also offers an excellent opportunity to develop change management experience, with involvement in the Trust’s proposed Cost Improvement Programme (CIP) project, to switch the first-line pharmacological thromboprophylaxis agent across the Trust. We will provide the successful candidate with a comprehensive induction covering all aspects of Trust work, support from senior pharmacy staff and an environment to develop further.

Main duties of the job

Key activities of the post holder will be to:

  • To lead, deliver and contribute to the strategic development of specialist clinical pharmacy (including clinics) and medicines optimisation to the Anticoagulation Service.
  • Provide expert advice on a broad range of pharmaceutical matters.
  • Plan and deliver specialist training within pharmacy and to the wider multidisciplinary team.
  • Plan and co-ordinate projects or audits for the Anticoagulation Service.
  • Contribute to the strategic planning of the Anticoagulation Service.
  • Be an active member and contribute to the Hospital Thrombosis Group.

The successful applicant will enjoy working in a busy challenging environment, be able to manage multiple priorities and deliver against tight deadlines. You will have good communication skills and be an enthusiastic educator. You should possess a postgraduate qualification in clinical pharmacy or equivalent and have the relevant hospital pharmacy experience. Experience of working and influencing in a multi-disciplinary team and an independent prescribing qualification (or working towards this) are essential.

St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust itself is a major acute hospital that offers specialist care for complex injuries and illnesses, including trauma, neurology, neurosurgery, cardiac care, lipid disorders, renal transplantation, cancer care and stroke. We are the regional specialist care provider for South-West London, Surrey and beyond. Acute and tertiary health services are delivered from over 1,000 beds across two sites, by around 10,000 staff. The helipad was opened in spring 2014 and the work of the Emergency Department has been captured on Channel 4’s ‘24 Hours in A&E’ programme.

  • Clinical pharmacy skills at MSc/Diploma level
  • Demonstrates a level of clinical reasoning and judgement
  • Demonstrates excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to influence senior pharmacy and medical staff, and the multidisciplinary team
  • Ability to identify and prioritise clinical work and manage time effectively to work to agreed deadlines
  • Ability to present complex data and reports at senior board meetings and committees

  • Familiarity with JAC/CMM computer system

  • Demonstrates a good core knowledge of therapeutics and pharmacology with a record of successful application in current post

Experience

Essential

  • Substantial post registration hospital pharmacy experience as a clinical pharmacist including some experience in critical care
  • Experience of directorate work including drug expenditure reporting, formulary management, DTC applications etc
  • Experience in delivering training and education at undergraduate and postgraduate level
  • Experience of working within a role involving multidisciplinary teamwork
  • Experience of formulating protocols, guidelines and SOPs
  • Experience of co-ordinating and leading audits
  • Experience of managing change and implementing service improvement

Desirable

  • Specialist clinical pharmacy experience in anticoagulation
  • Experience in managing others
  • Experience of identifying and managing risk in a clinical specialty
  • Experience of managing patients in an outpatient setting

Qualifications

Essential

  • B. Pharm / M. Pharm / BSc (Pharmacy) or equivalent
  • Member of the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC)
  • Diploma in clinical pharmacy practice or equivalent
  • Registered independent prescriber or working towards qualification
  • Evidence of Continuing Professional Development

Desirable

  • Membership of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society
  • Diploma Tutor accreditation
  • Formal leadership or management training
