Job overview
This new post will lead and deliver the clinical pharmacy service for the Enhanced Level A Paediatric Oncology Shared Care Unit (POSCU) services across Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust (RS) and Ashford St Peter’s NHS Foundation Trust (ASPH). These Trusts work in a collaborative group model. The POSCU services operate as part of the North and South Thames Operational Delivery Networks (ODNs), with the Royal Marsden, University College London and Great Ormond Street as Principal Treatment Centres (PTCs).
The successful applicant will join an experienced team of specialist pharmacy staff at Royal Surrey Cancer Centre who provide a comprehensive service to oncology, haemato-oncology and surgical oncology patients. The post will be primarily based at RS, with ad hoc requirements to attend on-site at ASPH.
This post requires a postgraduate clinical pharmacy qualification and specialist experience in paediatric oncology. We would endeavour to support any relevant personal/career development training when in post.
Main duties of the job
To lead, provide and develop the clinical pharmacy service for the Enhanced Level A Paediatric Oncology Shared Care Unit (POSCU) service across Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust (RS) and Ashford St Peter’s NHS Foundation Trust (ASPH). The service will be supporting the South Thames Children’s Cancer Principal Treatment Centre (PTC).
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The post holder will work as part of the pharmacy team to lead, provide and develop specialist clinical pharmacy services to paediatric oncology across RS and ASPH.
The main responsibilities of the post holder will be to:
- Liaise between Trusts, wards, departments and pharmacy to ensure that pharmacy services are tailored to meet the POSCU service needs wherever possible.
- Act as a specialist role model and an expert in medicines management within paediatric oncology.
- Participate in outpatient clinics to deliver and promote high quality, cost-effective and patient-focused pharmaceutical care according to the needs of the service.
- Act as a pharmacist independent prescriber to optimise the care of patients.
- Ensure a high level of clinical pharmacy input to the care of patients within paediatric oncology, providing interface and discharge liaison and support.
- Actively participate in multidisciplinary ward rounds, delivering and promoting high quality, cost-effective, patient-focused pharmaceutical care.
- Provide patient and carer education and close liaison across the interface.
- Promote safe medicines use within the paediatric oncology.
- Develop and implement local medicines policies, guidelines and ePrescribing systems.
- Provide internal and external education and training of healthcare professionals.
- Supervision of pharmacy staff.
- Provide regular financial reporting, medicines usage and expenditure forecasting, and medicines budget management.
- Contribute and participate in research and audit.
- Work with the Pharmacy Senior Leadership Team (SLT) to extend the boundaries of professional practice within the paediatric oncology.
