The Fetal Medicine Lead Midwife will provide expert midwifery leadership and advanced clinical support for women with complex fetal conditions, ensuring a high‑quality, safe and compassionate service across outpatient, inpatient and community settings.
Working closely with fetal medicine consultants, sonographers and the wider multidisciplinary team, the post holder will coordinate specialist care pathways, deliver continuity for families, and act as the primary point of contact throughout the pregnancy journey.
They will lead the operational running of fetal medicine services, support national standards and audit requirements, including Saving Babies’ Lives Version 3, and drive improvements to enhance patient experience and reduce inequalities.
The role also supports workforce development by guiding, mentoring and empowering midwifery staff, contributing to a skilled, confident and resilient team.
Coordinate and deliver midwifery care for pregnant women with complex fetal findings or suspected abnormalities, ensuring safe, personalised and evidence‑based practice.
Act as a key point of contact throughout the pregnancy journey, providing continuity, informed choice and sensitive communication of fetal medicine results.
Collaborate closely with fetal medicine consultants, sonographers, neonatal teams, obstetricians and specialist midwives to ensure seamless multidisciplinary care.
Lead day‑to‑day operational activity within the fetal medicine service, including clinic flow, staffing oversight, workload prioritisation and timely escalation of clinical concerns.
Drive service development and improvement initiatives, including pathway redesign for fetal anomalies and reducing inequalities in access to fetal medicine care.
Support the professional development, wellbeing and retention of midwifery staff working within fetal medicine and related pathways.
Maintain and update fetal medicine and preterm birth databases, ensuring accurate KPI reporting to inform audit, governance and service performance.
Contribute to specialist clinics such as the Preterm Birth Clinic, supporting women with previous preterm birth, cervical insufficiency or risk factors for early delivery.
Lead or support audits including the Saving Babies’ Lives Care Bundle Version 3, using findings to strengthen safety, fetal surveillance and growth assessment pathways.
